are oats safe for barefooters?

Buddy is on , 1 feed a day in evening - he has one round scoop safe and sound, one round scoop bruised oats, glug of veg oil, pernamax equine tabs & danilon, and some hay if when he feels like it. - he lives out 24/7 with 5 cows and fat as butter and barefoot!!

7lbs of oats per day s pretty extreme, I won't comment

Well knowing what Frank gets and the level of work he is in, compared to GS's who I suspect are hunting, no I wouldn't think it extreme. - and is suggesting that even when fed in relatively higher quantities she experiences no problems.

I like this which was previously posted by Dry Rot

For example, Fream's "Elements of Agriculture", 13th edition (1948), the standard farming text book back then states....

"A suitable ration for a heavy farm horse doing medium work would be:

Oats..........12lb per day= 84lbs per week (i.e. two bushels a week)
Hay.......... 16lbs per day = 112lb per week.

"....Custom and experience indicate that oats form the most suitable concentrated food for horses. For horses doing fast work, such as hunters, oats are essential".

Brilliant feed for BF horses, oats are oats and you know exactly what you are getting. Mine have been on them for years.

Even the good old PC manual says 30lbs/day complete ration is not excessive for a large horse in hard work, so less than 1/3 of that in straights is hardly "extreme" for hunters in the peek of the season. I doubt Gs feeds that every day year 'round, she was only making the point she does and, amazingly, the horses have not died or killed her.

I don't think anyone is saying your average small horse being ridden 5x a week needs that, but you hope people have more sense than to decide on feeing levels going by random posts on the Internet!

My barefooter is also on oats, does great on them, I prefer straights as you know exactly what you're feeding, then I add my own vit/mineral mix.

All unshod, soaked oats for all ages and types.

My Farrier says that 2 of my horses have absolutely perfect feet (the barefoot gurus would use them as shining examples he says) so oats can't be doing any harm.
