I put our nice youngster up for sale last week on this website and have not had one enquiry. Is it too early in the year or has the economic climate put a stop to horse purchasing?

There is a Market for a good animal. I think the last 2 weeks in feb are slow for most sales anyway, saying that I also bought one last week. You could try some of the other advertising sites as well.

I have just bought a youngster and I have seen a few posts on here saying that they are looking for a new horse, so I would agree with Vibella.

Have you advertised on just one website/place or several?
Try perhaps Preloved, Horsemart, Horse and Hound (obviously lol), Horsedeals, adhorse....are just a few I can think of.

Good luck x :D

I am desperately trying to buy a horse but can't find anything :(

I think most people browse horsemart and horsedeals in the first instance, perhaps try advertising there too?

Yep they're selling, but some people are struggling to grasp the fact prices have to be justified now and there are so many bargains about your horse has to be actually doing something and getting results to bring a big price in.
People are being fussier when they buy. Give ti time, if your horse is a fair price someone will be along.

i have only just started to look, lost the old one in jan, i am taking my time as in no rush etc

but in looking i have noticed that there is a lot of variation of price for what appears the same type of animal. people have forgotten that the money climate at the momment means that they might have to re think how much their horse is worth. at the end of the day a horse is only what someone is willing to pay.

At the momment the market if flushed with young and old stock as the cost of hay and straw continues to rise, people are tending to reduce their numbers and also keep the good horse pony that they ride.

i think over the next couple of years is when the cuts are starting to take hold we will see a drastic change in the horse marker on a good point though i hope this makes people think a bit about breeding and whether it is the right thing to do.

I have one advertised on HQ, going on others at the same level he isn't over priced (unless they are too!) haven't had a phone call for 3 wks, i even renewed the ad so it went to the top of the page. Cracking little horse too, he has been placed at BE, has BSJA winnings and does a lovely test and a very smart worker, no doubt if i advertised him for 5k i would be inundated but feel he is worth more than this.
Looks like daughter will be doing another season on him.

The answer seems to be yes and no. I have her advertised on several sites but still no enquiries. Is £3000 a fair price to ask for a youngster who has been professionally backed and turned away to mature? I am not looking to make a profit just cover some of my costs and find her a good home where someone has the time and facilities to bring her on.

The fact she isn't in work would put me off - the suspicous person in me would wonder if you are selling her beacuse she's been a nightmare - not saying this is your reason but any horse that is out of work / sold from the field is a bigger risk. I would suggest getting her in work and then i'm sure she'll sell.

I am..well I'm wanting to but can't find anything to even go look at that is within about 1.5 hours away. I look every few days at horsemart, horse quest, H&H and Horse Deals.

Everything is either really young, needs bringing on or old and wanting a quieter life. What I want is something that is around 9 yrs old, around 15.3hh that will give me confidence over fences, especially xc and put up with my rubbish riding. Doesn't have to jump above 1m but must hack out alone.

Really hope market fills up with something like I'm wanting soon as I will soon have to pay £25 a week to retain my stable :(

People are buying horses - I bought one almost 2 weeks ago. The seller had to drop his price further though - its definitely a buyers market.

£3000 for a youngster is quite a lot to me but then I would never pay that much for a horse that's been there and done it either. Most horses for sale at the moment are little more than £1800, the average is around £1200.

If you are able to hold on to your youngster till spring I'm sure the interest will pick up.

We put one online Friday, lots of calls and interest and he's sold and going today (Sunday) Admittedly a section A rising 2YO so low value. Similarly found a home for my section C rising 5YO very quickly, but again for a very low price...

My friend has just sold her very nice scopey genuine horse after he was on the market for months, not a youngster and had compitition history but not what he could have with a more experianced rider.

She advertised on horsemart first when she got almost zero interst, he was still on horsemart when she also advertised on h@h website, and got ilondated with calls. I still can not work out why all these people that responded to the h@h advert did not bother looking at horsemart, surely if you had any sense you would look at all the common online sales sites.

That said that does not help you op as I believe you say yours is on h@h already. Personally depending on the height and type of the horse I think 3k is a very reasonable price for a broken in nice youngster, if I was looking I would be looking at unbroken at this price too. I think the problem is the newly broken part, a lot of people want a made product.
Things will pick up soon though more buyers will come as the outside warms up. Good luck.

I've got a fab one for sale, but TBH haven't really started properly advertising him yet (all costs money!). Then I'll be looking for a youngster, no point in looking until I sell though as I know it could be a while judging by other sellers comments!

He is a lovely boy too, have been drooling over the advert today. I have a youngster by Brenin at my yard, she is a lovely mare, certainly made me interested in his stock. Your daughter has produced yours beautifully. If he was around the 5K mark I'd be one of those inundating you;)

I think good horses are selling but it is a buyers market,, and buyers are being very definite about what they want and aren't willing to compromise - rightly so, as they can afford to be with so many horses for sale at the moment.

I will be putting a purebred ID rising 4 yo I have owned from a weanling up for sale at the end of march, also backed last summer been turned away for the winter hes 17.2hh, now want to sell, I am thinking 3k is reasonable, I know exactly how much it has cost me to get him to this point, I keep him at home, out all year on good grass, 3k is not making me much money for 3.5 years work, he has been done properly, if people think this is too much then Im not sure how anyone will be able to properly produce a nice youngster ready to start a career with someone.

I also bought a horse on Sunday :D I think people are after cheap ponies at the minute, so even if it is slightly over priced to get your ideal, people may well just by pass the add.

We have sent my mare away again to be brought back into work as very little interest shown when advertised as mentioned in my first post. The problem is at £140 a week the longer she stays there and doesn't sell the more of a loss I am making.

What is a fair price though? It's one thing to say it's a buyer's market, but you don;t sell the family silver because you are a bit overdrawn! It's not reasonable to expect sellers to give away a good horse either. I have a couple of youngsters and a cob for sale but have am going to hang onto them until the market picks up, due to the frankly insulting offers I have had.

I have one for sale. Again a youngster that needs re-backing at a decent price. He has only been on the market for just over 2 weeks and have had about 20 calls, emails or texts but no-one ( but one lady who I have coming on Saturday ) wants to travel to see him.

Well, we have decided to keep him for now, my daughter will be doing her gcse's soon and due to the closest BE events being over 2 hrs away we have BD'd him(won his first novice class last sunday) alongside BSJA and may affiliate him as a worker too, so we should have a fairly busy summer without having to travel so far. He may well be advertised later in the summer but we'll see.

I advertised my mare and she went today so a week and a half in total. Had 2people come to see her who both wanted her. However, if those 2 weren't interested then she would still be with me as I have only had about 5 calls and a few emails. She was up for 6000 although some people suggested she could be worth nearer 8000 but a horse is only worth what someone will pay and I really didn't have the time so priced her realistically.

I think it is slow atm though and def a buyer's market! :)

If its not stupid money then yes, lets remember its a buyers market - its a lot harder for sellers to be keeping their horses at a stupid price than it is for buyers to just sit you out til you reduce them to something sensible!

Any long may it continue :D
