Just a pondering at present, but if you owned say 6 acres of land with 3 stables and a haystore, no dwelling, would you have to pay rates on it? Purely for domestic use not commercial in any respect?

They can be yes sadly, even if the use is purely personal, simply because it is a non domestic property (ie no dwelling on site). Whether they are and whether they would apply it for your case with only 3 stables will depend on the local ratings officer's interpretation

The rules basically say that to be domestic it would have to be a house or a building in the curtilage of a house or very close to the house with direct access and probably something which could be passed in a single land title/conveyance as the house.

Hi, yes you will have to pay business rates on it.... Even though it's not a business. I have two acres of land with 3 stables on it and last year was told I'd have to pay rates on it... Business rates. I pay just over £200 a yr but I'm going to apply for business rates relief which will bring it down a bit.

Hi we have a small yard 5 acres with stables - we dont have to pay rates x

If they arent attached to your property, then you are lucky. Not that it's fair, but the rules are clear, if its not classed as domestic and part of your residential property, even if its not used for commercial purposes, then non domestic rates can be levied.....
