Need better grip on the roads, so when I try to stop we stop and not slip. I thought this may be a reason why Frank trots so darn fast because he is scared of slipping?
A road nail is simply that..when he has new shoes ask for road nails instead of normal nails, they are slightly squarer. A road stud is like a normal stud you would use, it screws into the shoe.
No they arent. road nails or stud nails are a normal nail with a hard 'pimple' on the top that stay in the shoe. Road studs need to be put in the stud hole in the shoe. I used to do hours of roadwork on my old boy and only ever had road nails in - all 4 feet, and he was fine on the them. Never used studs on him. They are also a lot cheaper!
My farrier fits my boy with road nails and road pins, the nails are included in the price but if I want extra pins then I have to pay extra for these. They just give you extra grip.
no ,a road nail has a small tungsten pin drilled into the head . a duratrack nail has a small blob of hard surface weld , welded on the nailhead , there are several types of roadstud , a flush fitting knock in with a tunsten pin inserted , a collared knock in which sticks out 8/10 mm again with a tungsten pin inserted , and there are numerous screw-in studs available . we only use tungsten pins , dont forget some slippage should be expected and is natural , stopping the foot from this natural slippage in an abrupt manner with big studs causes extreme wear and rear on the joints and IMO should not be practised as lameness issues occur very quickly. please take note i am talking about studs being used for roadwork , jumping is another issue
