Are Spotty Appy types..........

..................more sensitive skinned?

I have an appy type boy who has incredibly sensitive skin, he has a lot of pink skin. Yet i have a 23 year old Cremello who's as tough as old boots, and never had a sensitivity problem except for catching too much sun.

Mine is very sensitive to flys he gets rashes very easily and is itchy quite often. He has to have a rug of some description on at all times or he just gets eaten by all the flies, they seem to be attracted to him aswell.

But his personality is very sensitive aswell if you tell him off he'll sulk if you know what I mean and if he gets hurt he is the biggest wimp ever! But I do love him :D
 
I used to have a tough as old boots cremello too! Our yard back then was a bog in the winter and he used to come in plastered in wet mud, how he never got mud fever is a miracle! He did need suncream on his nose and eye brows in the summer though!

We've got a spotty 14.2hh pony at our yard, he is a very tough cookie despite having mostly pink skin. Must be the pony genes in him as he's a pretty hardy tough pony type.
There is also a meadow close to my house where horses are grazed by locals all summer, the majority of those are spotted ponies and they also seem pretty tough as none ever get rugged, or fly sprayed, again though, they are more pony type, rather than finer appy types.

We've got a 14.1 welsh sec D though who looks as though she ought to be tough but is such a drama queen about everything she hates mud, won't step in puddles or poo, gets stressed if she has one fly on her, flounces about when you try and hose her down. She is a very delicate lady! She practically faints when she sees the clippers cos she is so ticklish! I think it is partly down to charactar!!
 
Kokopelli :D mine is very sensitive in personality too he sulks if you tell him off - bless him

In other ways he's tough as old boots winters out, admittedly rugged as he is clipped but hes a really good doer and will winter out 24/7 with a full clip, and next to no food or hay and still be fat come spring :rolleyes:
 
Seorise - it must be a cremello thing being very dirty :rolleyes: my boy has been know to roll on the grass track on the way to the field because he just can't wait, and ive seen him so plastered in mud all thats white is the bit around his bum that he just couldn't manage to grind into the dirt :eek:
 
Yep, my appy has pink skin and also is very sensitive to the pollen around his nose in the summer. He is also sensitive in every other way too - he can be spooky, he snorts at anything which looks unusual and he isn't keen on people handling him who he doesn't know. He is a nightmare to clip because his is skin is so sensitive it makes him really ticklish! But I love him loads and wouldn't swap him for the world! :D

Kokopelli - I know what you mean about the sulking thing! My Farrier can tell when mine is in a bad mood just by looking at his eyes!
 
My nr leopard spotted gets really really itchy in the spring and wen its really hot. We had to put a fly rug and fly mask on him. But he is really hardy etc in the winter. Doesn't't need a thick rug on him and he sweats loads in a light weight if its only slightly hot Like 12 degrees. He is half Welsh though.
:o mine has a really girly high pitch winnie too! It's so embarrassing at shows! His winnie is more girly than my 2 yr old 12hh exmoor filly lol!
Mine could winter out 24/7 as well but out pathetic tb needs a friend in the stable with her.

Came on to new lounge looking for 'Hovis's Friday piece' and noticed the magic word 'Spotty'.
On high pitched whinnies: my yearling gelding (few spot) has a deeper voice than his 6 year old dad!!! (few spot stallion). Not good for street-cred!
Had to apply Sudocreme to both their noses tonight as they were both a bit pink! Dad had a full face mask on too! Junior has outgrown his. (excuse for shopping tomorrow).

My boy has a very low picthed whinny aswell, we laugh at him cause he sounds like an old man laughing! He's such a wimp though the voice just doesn't match the personality! :p
 
Hi Kokopelli - I have just done a search on Hovis and found his mum has gone on hols - typical as I have only just been introduced to those rather amusing pieces.
Hope you have ordered your calendar - spread the word. There is a nice pile of them now - hot off the press today - all ready to be posted out to 'spotty' lovers in the UK.
