You are allowed them for the dressage phase in BE, and I know with the Eventing Ireland rules the shank must not be longer than 3.5cms long (Ponies 1.5cms)

If it's Pony Club you need you're DC's permission

I know that over here (Ireland) if its a Riding Club Comp then you have to be Intermediate or above to wear them!

In pure dressage they are legal, and compulsary over about medium! Hope you find out. There was a talk about this not so long ago in Stable talk or competition rder, cant remember which one!

Does anyone know why they are complusory above medium? I have never understood the logic of this. It seems to me that most riders would choose to use them, but that it should be down to them to decide.

Probably because they are too 'refine the aids'??

On that logic you would make riders carry a stick too, but as far as I am aware they do not. I understand that riders may choose to use spurs, but to mandate them makes no sense.

Above medium you can not use a whip, but have to use spurs, for many of the moves spurs are almost essential, some horses may be trained with out, but i think you can use fake spurs (with tiny stick bits)
