If it is a cage and 'unkind' please can you tell me why, even in the middle of summer, my ponies are queing at the gate in the evenings asking to be put in their cages!!!!!

I would suggest it's because they're trained too!
I've recently got 2 pet lambs and they were getting very fat out 24/7 so I started bringing them in at night (need to sort fencing) and they now wait and even call me to get them in!! When I have routines like this with the horses it usually only takes a day or two for them to learn the routine and be waiting at the gate.
having said that I do think they ask to come in rather than it just being a routine sometimes.
Both my mares are stabled for most of the winter - one of them I have to literally tug and pull her to come out - she loves her stable
The other hates all elements of weather and would much rather be in her stable, I have no qualms whatsoever of them being in as long as they are exercised daily (whatever the weather) and if we have a dry spell of more than two days they can go out in the field - but after about 30 mins they are at the gate hoping to be brought back in again!
Although I will admit I love the summer (if we ever get one!) where they are out 24/7 simply for financial reasons!!!
