I'm a small animal nurse but I've worked as an equine nurse. Generally you have to find a job as a trainee in an equine vet training practice and then do college on day release. The biggest problem is the lack of equine TPs (google to find the list). However, if I remember correctly one of the unis has started doing an equine nursing degree now, so that's another option.
I am currently in my 2nd year (L3) EVN. I have been working at a smallish but rapidly growing equine practice since 2002 (OMG where has the time gone!!)
Although i gather that the RCVS are scrapping the current course as of now-ish (no more entries) which has put many people up in arms including the two main colleges that run it. The RCVS will be the best people to speak to with regards to the course but i'm not sure if there is a definite out come about it yet.
(At the moment i am trying to work my way through the EVN L3 portfolio which is the most boring and ridiculous thing i have ever done in my life!)
It is a busy and can be a very stressful job with long hours and, depending on where you work, sometimes not the best pay!
Although i do get great job satisfaction when a poorly horse goes home well
It is a very interesting job, and where i work i get to do a wide range of things including assisting in xrays, scans ect, working in the theatre, lab work, lameness investigations, dressing changes ect and also mucking out!
Hope that helps. Feel free to Pm me if you have any other questions
Im in my 4th year (final year) of a small animal vet nursing degree. Just thought id sympathise with Dottie as i have just finished my portfolio and it was such a waste of time, especially now its been stopped!!
The EVN's at the place i worked seemed to work very hard, but did alot of mucking out etc. They seem to enjoy it and get to do some farm work aswell.
The RCVS is changing the award structure for August 2010 and therefore it will be easier to train as an EVN as they have proposed smaller Equine practices can enrol as ATP's (auxillary Training Practices) rather than have to comply with the current rigorous TP requirements.
There will be no more NVQ award which is the current training process to acheive your EVN qualification.
Watch this space and you would be better off considering your training after August as its all going to change. In the mean time see if you can get your foot in the door with a current Equine TP (training Practice) or a very large non registered practice but only if they seem keen to take up the new training scheme.
