Are there genuine, safe schoolmasters....

To a select market yes! I know one thats gone out on full loan and a couple for share. The thing is a lot of people with schoolmasters dont want them shared/loaned by novices or people who ride in a very different style to them, especially if they are competing them so its a more select market - well it was with my boy anyway!

Yeah that's understandable!!

Yes - but within limits.

As Snowysadude says they don't come onto the market very often. You need to be in the right place at the right time.

Ponies come up a little more often as kids out grow them - a horse that good you tend to keep forever.

If you are reasonably small or light (and I have to confess I am not necessarily either!) try looking for a 14.2hh. My lad - and he does tick all the boxes - is a 14.2hh cob X. All my previous horses had been shire X or similar as I am (I think) a bit on the heavy side. He takes me brilliantly and does a bit of everything. So as long as your legs don't drag on the floor don't ignore the taller ponies.

Try contacting your local Riding Clubs and Pony Clubs. (My boy came from a PC DC!) If you have not already had a share or loan you may need to build your credentials. Horses like this are gold dust and loaners often have a choice about who they go to. You may need a proven track record not only in good husbandry but also in a particular discipline if that is what you want them for.

Are you looking for one then? Also out of interest what would you class as a schoolmaster (level and dressage/jumping ability roughly as a minimum) if you dont mind me asking? Its something I have always wondered!

Casually sort of looking more for a share (as in if the right opportunity came up I'd look at taking it, but not going out of my way to look hard!)

Fortunately Shay I am actually only 5ft and ponies are a preference of mine :p

In terms of level, dressage is my passion, I have been fortunate enough to compete BD at Elem and train up to Adv Med in the past, but due to a variety of things including a long break and a line of inappropriate ponies I've taken a hit on the confidence levels so looking for something genuine (like my old competition pony) to help me re-gain both confidence and ability. I'd probably consider a schoolmaster in terms of dressage something that has well established lateral work - so Adv Med, but I'm by no means looking for something at that level, something that safely walks, trots and canters and enjoys working in the school (maybe with some sideways ;)) would suit me just fine!
