Just wondering what your opinions are on allen & page calm and condition, and alfa A oil.

Would you describe these feeds as 'heating'/ likely to cause horse to become over exiteable? (also in stable yard but thought may get more response here)

No have fed both to a very forward going pony and never heated him up. Most people at my yard feed Alfa Oil and have never had a problem.

Alpha A Oil sent my normally placid laid back horse off her rocker I'm afraid....plus she tied up shortly after being on it, which the vet suspected could have been due to the very high protein content....

Have used Alfa A oil and has never heated my horsey up ... then again nothing does! so i may not be of help :p ... although my friend used it one her forward goin horse and didnt heat him either

Thanks for all your replies. basically changed TBs feed a few months ago as he needed to put on condition which he now is steadily onto alfa a and C&C. He was being given adlib hay on top of this and at the time of feed change the grazing was pretty poor.

Of late, the horses at the yard are all being fed haylage, including mine (apparently due to YO not being able to obtain hay), and on top of this the fields had been recently sprayed, as a result the grass has much richer!

TB is not loopy in any way when being ridden at all, does not misbehave and has just the right amount of energy... however apparently he has been exiteable when being led out to the field in the mornings (I am on part livery) by rearing up.

I am not sure how much of this is caused by the feed he is on, or the fact that he is on haylage at night and lush grass for approx 5-6 hours a day?

Sorry to say this is EXACTLY how is started with my girl....gradually got worse and worse being turned out and bought in to the point where she was just leaping about constantly....after about 2-3 weeks, she started getting really spooky to ride. Cut the alpha a oil and she was back to normal within a week.
Not saying this is what will happen with your horse...obviously there are plenty out there that don't react to it....but worth keeping an eye on..

Thanks for that I will keep an eye! Hes got 1/4 of a bag left so will trial him off it and see if it makes any difference. i dont know excactly how long this exiteable behaviour had been going on, as I was only told about it over the weekend... but from what it seems my apparently 'dangerous horse' seems to be the hot topic of discussion down the yard at the moment, but nobody actually discussed it with me :(

Nice :(

My vet did say it could take up to 2 weeks to come out of her system so I would trial him off it for at least that time and don't be surprised if there is no change before then.
Obviously it might not be that so if still the same after a couple of weeks or so, it will probably be something else!
