I was working at the yard yesterday, and two new liveries came. When I went past checking the other stables to see what needed skipping out (I wasn't sure which they were in so I looked in assuming it was one of ours) they didn't have shavings beds as such, it looked like sand, what was it?

It was a brand new bed, no horse had been in though. And when I mucked out the shavings bed and went to get some more, there was bags of this sand stuff.

I don't know then - as the pellets breakdown when you 'activate' them with water to amke the bed - but in their bags they look like pony nuts!!

Maybe it was just very finely cut shavings :S
I think I've seen those pellets on the internet, lol, are they lincolnshire something that youre talking about?

Yes, I think you can. I knew of someone years ago that used peat!!! they had a particularly messy mare who would poo and wee all over her bed, shavings were a no no, and straw would just get soaked through, so they opted for peat-which is like dirt. YUK

, very messy, and not good for the horses feet.

I also know a girl that uses shredded paper, which she gets from a paper mill, quite cheaply. it actually makes a very nice bed.

I think I will stick to my shavings!!!!
