Are they want you had in your head?

I was looking for a 5-7 year old gelding around 15hh, which needing bringing on.

I bought a 3.5 year old 14.1hh mare that had been sat on twice!

The only thing I got right was I didn't want a grey.

21 years later I'm glad I bought her.

I was looking for an ID or chunky ISH originally, as big as possible so 16.2 minimum... Searched for months, found nothing, had a TB on loan, fell off and broke arm, thought maybe smaller might be less painful, remembered I liked haflingers when I was little, bought my lovely 15hh mare :-)

I had a beautiful black a good 16hh plus mare, who was already schooled and ready to compete..

Ended up with this:

A 14.1 and a half, cream dun highland, who was rising 3.

And who still schools with a severe grudge! *rolls eyes*

That pony is beautiful. I'd abandon all my preconceived ideas for something as lovely...

Like Spring Feather I look for a specific breed, bloodlines, colour and gender. I don't look at anything else as I buy with a purpose in mind. Even Ella, who was an impulse buy was the right breed, right sex and a good colour, I wouldn't even have gone to see her if she had been a bay gelding.

I wanted an appaloosa about 15hh, probably about 6 to 10yrs old.
Got a 4 yr old, lame, tb 16hh.
I don't regret it for a moment.
Actually, I wasn't horse shopping at that time, it was an accidental buy.
Kx

I was looking for something sane and straightforward, good to hack and do a bit of dressage/RC activities, around 15.3/16.1, pref around 8-10 years old. Didn't care too much about colour (except no greys!) but black is my fave colour :)

Went to view the first one, had to travel off island so was crossing fingers that it wouldn't be a wasted journey!

I needn't have worried, he ticks every box! A bit green when I bought him last September but is coming on fab! So in this case the answer is yes! :D

no....

i wanted a grey or black youngster who was ready to back with a nice attitude...

i got a 2 year old brat, coloured, filly with a stonking attitude!!

always told myself i'd buy myself a shiny black Arabian. not sure why :p now I'm not a huge fan of Arabians. I then decided i wanted a dun/buckskin, I made sure i got one :o

(she sports many colours, so this is a picture that shows most of them! mid coat change from a year unclipped due to injury )
I also told myself i'd NEVER buy a coloured. I hated all 'cow horses' (looks-wise) with a passion :P Guess what I ended up with on an impulse buy!

and now I want another ;) love coloureds now !

like SF & Enfys I stick to my shopping list lol
I did buy a black foal and when she changed her coat she had a lot of white ticking making her look roan but technically she was still black

I was looking for a hardy type welsh sec d, something that didn't need a lot of Molly coddling.. Came back with a 16'1 tb gelding.. Lovely boy but high Maintenance!!

I've never looked for a certain horse so not really! I've been offered the few long term horses we've had- only one I went looking for but with no fixed idea in my head other than it was quiet sane and relaxed (its far from any of those!)

Went to a top class stud looking at a show quality sec A mare with foal at foot, walked round the wrong corner and found 2 sec A colt foals and a sec A filly foal standing knee deep in **** destined for Llanybyder and meat... and came home with them.

I wanted a been there, done that, cob gelding. 10-15 years old, about 15.2hh, confidence giver, NOT a coloured.

I came home with a 4yo 14hh unbroken coloured :o

On the plus side, I did hit the cob and gelding requirements...

you managed one better than me then :D I even ended up with a mare (not that I'd change her for the world now)

I was thinking most likely ISH type, but most importantly he had to be BLACK (like my old boy)

Ended up with...

Scatty Anglo Arab, and what's worse, a BAY!!!!

Having been in the position where I had to sell my beloved boy due to not making the height or build the only stipulations I had when buying my new one (who incidentally despite me worrying about not bonding with because I loved my last boy too much I love the bones of) was he or she must be of a certain height, had to be 15hh - no bigger, no smaller.

I bought him by word of mouth and he was just described by my friend as a 15hh cob type 4 yr old.

Got there and was presented with a horse I had dreamed about as a girl, the sleek, shiney, full maned jet black dream horse with movement to die for and the temperament to match (well I think so anyway!) LOL.

I have, until now only ended up with horses ive never really loved looks wise but yay I got one I like this time!

I always wanted a bright bay Sect D gelding and 5 years ago I bought just that and he has been a nightmare. He is handsome and just the horse I wanted to look at, it ends there. The day I viewed him I was on my way to see another one that had become lame but the girl said she had another for sale on her yard and I went to see it, it was a bright chestnut, skinny necked TB gelding. I wasn't even going to try him as not my type at all but got on and he was schooled to perfection but he was a chestnut TB, I walked away.:( Think that was the biggest mistake I have made with horses. Ended up with my beautiful cob but he has been and still is hard work. I have learnt never to be fooled by the looks bit late now I know, will never part with welshie but can honestly say riding him is a chore and not enjoyment.

i wanted something that could jump and was quite young but was decently schooled, but not a complete push button, that i could take to local shows since id already done the project thing with my last one. definitely didnt want a bay as i thought they were too samey.

i got a bay ex racer whod been left starved in a stable, couldnt jump, still cant, and still goes around the school like a giraffee  but i wouldnt change him for anything :)

I wanted a 16hh+ light-middleweight type (Selle Francais preferably) suitable for sticking my novice OH and his kids up on that could also school up to do some dressage with me.

Ended up with a little 15.1hh ex flat racer who has inspired me to take up polo again, is a lovely hack, looks to have a little pop in her and is coming along nicely on the flat so hope to get to a dressage test with her soon! Much smaller than we wanted but she is a diamond and still filling out at just turned 5 and with her temperament we overlook her littleness...

I came home with a scrawny, poor doer, bay, stroppy ex racer mare who looked like this -

Who developed into this -

ImmyS, out of interest how old was she in the first and second pics? Amazing difference; I am hoping in the summer that ours will get some more condition on!
