Are vets always overcautious?

Before anyone thinks I'm going to go against vets advice, I'm not (as too scared!) but I wondered if anyone else thinks that vets over do things?

Oscar had a septic hock but is all healed. Agreed that he should stay in for a month until the scab heals etc. but I don't understand why he has a week field rest?

Surely if there's no bony damage it's just a case of getting him fit.

I wouldn't go against the vet but just interested to know people's views.....

a month off sounds good to me.. but then a week field rest sounds pointless...

Sorry months' box rest and a month's field rest....really don't get the field rest bit as it's obviously not to keep anything clean as he'll be rolling for britain!

to be honest, id possible go against the vet, ive just had 2 really bad cases of listening to my vet which has 1, left a horse suffering for a year, 2 laminitus went undetected, i was told box rest bute etc, it was only after when i sold th ehorse back to its old owner i discovered the lami and am pretty sure hed had another attack. oh then my stallion had a copd attack i wasnt happy with my vets treatment, so i rang another vet for a second opinion, THE outcome of all this is im writting to my vet complaining, bloody awful practice, not to mention over 2ks worth of vets bills. ( vet will be sacked also)

sorry for the ramble, my point, im not a know it all but know enough, and wish with 1 horse id instited on bloods 1 year ago, even when vet said no, if you know your horse and and enough go with a bit of what the vet says and a bit of play it by ear, ie see how the horse is.

mmmm, I might call tomorrow and just get an explanation as to why he needs field rest - he's not lame and he's needing to be worked!

No, IME vets are not over-cautious, quite the opposite actually. They're always telling people horses aren't lame enough to investigate. If a horse is not right that should be enough for them to take you seriously and to do investigations which are appropriate to the level of lameness. I think many are responsible for people working horses past the point of repair because they are not cautious enough.

I personally think vets are way to cautious, sometimes just common sense and a bit of rest does the job just fine... if you go the vets route, endless scans, x rays and a huge vet bill LOL!

I would imagine so that he can have gentle exercise, and rest without the strain of being asked to work.
I can't imagine a vet telling you to give another month off for no reason.

mmmm, that's what i thought it might be. I'd never risk him - I don't want another broken pony!

Oh well, luckily I have Ty Ty and a pony that I'm sorting out for the owner so that should keep me busy!

If i read the post right, he said a month box rest then a WEEK in the field?

I would think after standing in a box for a month, a week just wandering around the field would do him good. They can get very stiff after standing for a month and it would seem unfair to go straight back into work. I have to say I agree with the vet.

If anything I would reduce the box rest depending on the rate of healing and the state of the field.

Yes vets are often cautious and rightly so in these days of litigation. I agree after a month cooped up in a box a week of relaxation is what is needed mentally and physically.
