Are Warmbloods and Warmblood crosses slow growers? And if so around what age(ish) do they mature in height? Some have told me they are some have told me they are no different:o

Heightwise Barns finished when he was about 4 1/2-5.....as far as actually filling out however, he's now just over 6 and only just starting to finally 'fill out'.

Mid 3 year old

Mine didn't stop growing until he was 9, he was 5 when we got him and 16.3hh and at 9 he finally stopped growing at 17.3hh.

No, all breeds develop skeletally at the same rate (the last growth plates fuse at the top of the neck at around 5 1/2 years old) except for very big horses that can need an extra time due to their size. Mental and muscle development continues after this of course. ;) :D

I wonder if its more like with humans some of us grow loads when we are young then stop, i stopped growing at about 12 and some of my friends suddenly shot up at 15-16, so im sure that could be the case in the horse world too?

my horse, whos a different breed was only supposed to make 15'2 and is only just 2 and is already 16hh, his mum was 15'3 and dad was 14'2, so wasnt expecting it!

It would be interesting to know how tall the grandparents were/are.

My Warmblood x Appaloosa was bought as a 3 year old and was only ever supposed to make 15.2 - 15.3 max. He is now 8 and is nudging 17.1 (we sincerely hope he has stopped now!). It appears the only input the appy genes have had is the loud colour.

He spent from 4 to 6 generally shooting upwards and has spent the last 2 years chunking up.

Mentally we are hopeful he will have grown up by the time he is 12;-)

yeh i should really do some research the breeder said that the mother who's an ex racer comes from a line of pretty big TB. the dad is a conny and although he was only 14'2 he was a tank, he looked a lot bigger! I've seen video's of the grand sire and he looked after 14'2 as well but also massively well build!

for any interested this is the boy in question :D

Just 15hh now(freshly measured ;)) hoping he'll manage at least 16hh, dam(Thoroughbred) is 15.2hh(though her confo isn't great, naturally 'down hill') sire(Warmblood) about 16.1hh i'd think now. String tests at around 15.3hh-16hh, though not sure how accurate that measures

I have a 6 year old Westfalian who is commonly mistaken for a 4 year old, so very slow to mature. He has grown 1 inch (from 16.3+ to 17+hh) so far between 4 and 6 and I fully expect him to go higher yet. I bought a 4 year old KWPN at 16.1+ and he was 16.3+ when he died at 10 years old. At least half of that 2 inches was put on between 7 and 9 years old.

Elena how old is your boy?

My boy came to us at 16.2hh as a 7 year old, he's now 12 and 17.2hh. Forgot to add he's a Dutch Warmblood. He is yet to develop a brain! ;)

my mare is a wbxtb and is just 5 and still growing. she was 16h at 2 and 16.3 now and still going. mother was 16.2 and dad was 16.3. howevere i had a swedish warmblood who mum was 15hands and dad was 16.2-3 and he ended up 17.2 so i dont think it truly follows all the time.

My lad was sold to me as a 16'2 WB 6 year old - vet reckoned he was only 5 though - he was 16'3 last time I measured him but I reckon hes not a hair off 17hh at the moment. I have heard that WB dont stop growing until they are 8/9 years old

Wow this is craziness, I can't believe they keep going! explains why my friends 6yr old wb x cob has grown loads since she bought her in Dec!

How tall is he at the bum? he does look quite bum high still, so im sure he will keep growing!

my boy was 2 in May and when I got him in feb he was 15'1 at the bum, 14'2 at the withers, now hes 16hh at the bum and 15'2 at the withers, so has managed to grow 3 inches in 4 months! again a different breed tb x conny but im sure by the sounds of it your boy will get pretty big :)

Well, you cannot get a life height certificate for any breed until the horse is 7, so they can keep growing, but won't necessarily. No way to know for sure - time alone will tell.

didn't think to measure him at the bum:o but i'd guess hed be about 15.2hh bum as he is bum high, hoping he'll finish off level but his dam is downhill:(

If he's only two you could easily get your 16 hands, (and maybe more, especially if there is something a lot taller in his ancestry!)

Good luck, try fertilizer :D

For a 2yr old he is very nicely put together - and should make you a super sort.[ he s very like the coloured warmbloods we used to breed- some Ico in there?or Samber?]
His legs are long, so you could hope he ll deepen out to make the height.
But its sods law. If you want them to grow they ll stop[ we had a warmblood stop growing at 2!], if you want them measuring in they ll grow till they re 8![show cob, ended up 16hh- in the days before maxis. ]
all the best with him - he is lovely

I'm another one with a slow grower.

KWPN, purchased just before his 8th birthday at 15.3hh. Now over 16hh, and at 17 still needs brain to grow up!

I hate these posts!!! (because they worry me!!!) in a word yes. Physically and mentally. Though I'm hoping mine won't grow too much more! At 16.2 at 3, he's big enough already!!!
