Are we in MW's now?

Both of mine are out in lightweights but only go out on warm sunny days(yard rules)

In at night with MW stable rugs on and are both seriously fluffy! Will be clipping very soon as im getting sick of waiting for them to dry after being ridden, and then will be having a fleece under stable rugs

Good god, unreal how molly coddled some horses are!

What are people going to do when it gets really cold!!
**not directed at anyone in particular, just thinking in print**

Mine are all out, no rugs, cosy shelter.
One has a trace clip.
TBs and TBx `s

Indeed! :D Mine is quite happy being mollycoddled :D

When it gets really cold, she will be in a MW stable rug with a full neck HW t/o rug over the top :) I have a variety of different weight rugs, so I can adjust accordingly! It works for me :D

People that are putting rainsheets on fully clipped horses, do you not worry they could be cold?! Horses naturally fluff themselves up to keep warm, and a raisheet won't offer any insulation.. so if you;ve clipped, they will have no way of making their own insulation?! :( I hate seeing clipped horses with what little hair they have standing up on end to try and keep warm :( Mine always has a nice flat shiny coat, even when fully clipped ;)

I am a lot more concerned about horses overheating when they are overrugged.

Horses can regulate their own temperature, but not when they are over rugged.

Mine will get rugs, but I dont just rug because its "that time of year"
Lucky enough to have them at home so I can check them regularly.

I also find its the wind and the rain that is worse than a drop in temperature.

Yes they can regulate their own temperature, but not as effectively when we've removed their coat!! Their eating habits generate heat, as well as moving about, finding shelter, and being able to fluff up their coat to creature air pockets which act as insulation.

My horse has no shelter in her field, and now has no hair! :p so therefore I choose to keep her well rugged to make up for these factors that she wouldn't have to deal with in the "real" world :)

I think a lot depends on on where you are in the country, is your field exposed, do you have a field shelter etc etc

I know that it has been not far off freezing up hee lately and we have been lucky if it reaches 13 degrees during the day. My field is quite exposed so although my cob has grown a coat to deal with this, the yearling hasnt so thats why he has a MW on as he was too cold. And trust me i hate rugging, especially when you work full time and cant just nip up at lunch time if you think its a bit too hot for what they were wearing over night. Au natural is so much easier

Fair enough.

Still think its crazy how some horses have been turned into wimpy pathetic animals by us humans.

Indeed! Unfortunately, a lot of horses have been bred wimps anyway ;) I have to clip as I don't ride until late at night due to work, so I'd much rather have a bald horse that I can hot cloth and rug up to turn back out, than a hairy one that I have to dry off when she gets sweaty, and then turn out at about 10.30 at night :( Unfortunately, thats the downside of having horses that have to fit in with our lifestyle!

No all mine including the TB are still naked 24/7, will be for as long as poss. TB is a good doer and i want her fluffy as poss before rugging she is turned away over the winter.

I am in the North East of Scotland so I certainly know what cold is!
It has only been down to 7 deg at night time so far (here)
I also work F/T, leave for work at 0545 and return at about 8 pm.

However, mine have a shelter and the field has natural shelter along 2 sides, so I am lucky.

Guess its just my pet hate seeing horses over rugged having seen what it does!

Again - that aint aimed at anyone!

None of my TB's at work that live out ever wear rugs so they are all just nice and hairy. My own horse is in full work and currently living out during the day and in at night, as he is not clipped yet he gets really hot so he is naked too. He tends to fat so the vet recommended that I try to keep weight off as much as possible hence why I tend to leave him unrugged. He'll be full clipped soon and then he will be rugged with a MW, if I was in a MW now I would have to double heavy rug when it gets really cold. I work outside and at the moment alternate between just a T shirt to having a coat on, it is far warmer than you imagine!

This answer your question?

:D Im actually shocked to say, she wrecked her l/w and shes not getting another!

(she will have her m/w on when it gets cooooooooool though and i mean minus's :D)

Honeys in a l/w at night as we are on a hill, and i mollycoddled her last winter so im breaking her in gently :p

Tb out in the day in lightweight and naked in at night at the moment. He has plenty of condition on him and prefers to be naked where possible. He'll be rugged later on as it gets colder and obviously if he is clipped.
It does make me laugh - I too think people over rug.
There are 3 Tb's in the yard and the rest are native types or crosses - all much hairier than mine. The Tb's are the least rugged if wearing anything! Some horses are seriously molly coddled!

My youngster and TB are naked day and night and living out. My gelding is in a rug between LW & MW and lives out too (He's a wimp) and he will be living in over night in about 2 weeks.

Full clip, everything off except legs and out today in full neck heavyweight, it's bl***y freezing here today! she's in lovely condition at the moment and I don't want her to lose it she only has to get cold for a short time and the weight will drop off and she's a warmblood.

Mine has a full clip and is in MW during the day with MW full neck at night and that is not me over rugging her as she gets heat rashes when rugged up too much and she hasn't been getting them with the MW. She is also a stressy chesnut mare that looses conditon easily. i think rugging is a very indiviual thing.

Nope, cob is plenty warm enough at the mo. It has been really sunny here recently - he was sweating up and uncomfortable in a heavier rug. Horses for courses :)

Row and Lola are naked 24/7 as they are both far too fat and 2bh not really feeling the cold. Exmoor actually sweats wen she is in the stable for even half hour! She will stay naked all year. Rowan will go in light weight as soon as it rains and is this cold.
Dancer is in medium weight without neck as she hasn't been clipped yet (lost the charger grrr) as soon as she is clipped she will b in medium with neck at night.
