Hi all,
New here so go easy on me, and i'm a bloke so thats another reason.

My wife always loved horses when she was young and went to shows, rode out etc, but never owned her own.(now in her forties)
Anyhow last year i bought her one which she adores and she has now rescued another little fella.
The thing is we live in rented property and the stables are a couple of miles away, terrible to get to in snow/ice.
Well we have chance to rent a house with 8 stables, arena and five acres of land split into paddocks.

It will cost more than what we pay now but she fell in love with it when she saw it, and the little beasts will be on our doorstep.

Thing is she will pack in work and i can't.

Are we mad to do this or would we regret it if we didn't

IMHO you are completely mad, but I'm sure you will regret it if you don't :) Totally unhelpful reply, sorry :D It has always been my dream to keep my horses at 'home'. Would you be allowed to rent out the extra stables for more income?

Yes the owner said we could do that.
Friends are already asking if they can move their horse, if we take it.

Wouldn't want too many though.

Maybe the wife could make a little income (strokes chin)

I'm jealous. :mad::mad::mad:

I've been trying to find a property like that for about 5 years now. I've even been considering moving to France where there might be something in our budget.

I would definitely go for it... but I would urge caution if you end up renting out stables. Things can quickly turn sour between friends and dont forget the extra work, visitors, possible insurance, fencing etc etc...
 
Sounds great! Just watch who you take in for livery.... Friends may turn in to enemies!

Someone had a post yesterday I think which sounded like a good idea- they were going to take in retired horses on livery that people would pay for them just to be happy.
 
You've passed the point of no return, on the madness front, so I'm afraid, yes, you have to go for it.

Sounds fab. I would do it personally. I would love to have my own land, was lucky enough to grow up with our own land and keep horses on it, but parents sold up after I moved out. I dream to one day have them at home again, now where is my lottery ticket......
 
Well we have gone and done it folks
Picked up the keys today
Planned move end of March
Offers to help with painting and decorating will be gratefully received, and be rewarded with copious ammounts of alcohol.

Also we (my wife really) rescued another beastie last night, thats three stables gone already and still no income :)

I'll be back with loads of questions about land management, muck heaps and lots of other stuff.

Hope you can help us along the way.

Congrats and good luck - I'm sure it will be quite an exciting and challenging time. A bit worried that painting the house takes precedence over prettifying the stables? Clearly proof of madness, but I hope you'll all be happy nonetheless!:D

Now that your wife has formed an rescueing addiction how would she feel about 'rescueing'/adopting me :eek: You seem like you've bought the best dream property ever:) Good luck with all of it and hope you make the best of it! Having your own arena let alone horses at home will be amazing!

:D stables are in excellent condition
The house seems to have taken second place, but then that means we can put our own stamp on it

We just moved to a house with 6 acres and planning permission for a yard and arena. Only been here 4 weeks but I love it and my horses seem really happy living out with a field shelter.
I'm sure you will both be very happy. Will look out for your future posts as I'm sure I'll have similar questions as we start on the yard etc. We are doing yard first, house second.

I would go for it but bear in mind it will be a lot work and there will be expenses. We bought our own place with land about 5 years ago and I love it but it is hard work repairing fences , poo picking, getting hay in and stored , seeding and fertilising fields, frozen troughs in winter etc and it will be difficult to take holidays. But if it's what you both want to do it will be great.
 
As owners of a smallholding, do it :D nothing beats seeing them in the morning.

It can be lonely, it WILL be hard work. Be aware of the riding issue (taking one out and leaving another, we ended up with 3 horses in the end - might even end up being 4!!)

If you take my modest opinion, don't bother with liveries. You'll need to be insured up to the hilt, taking phonecalls at all hours, no peace and quiet...for me it just isn't worth it.
