Are you a ‘cross breed snob’?

I am cross posting this as there is a similar discussion on another thread.

"It’s implied that breeding new types of dog to meet what people want is odd or stupid yet it will have been done for centuries."

I think there is an element of stupidity but to my mind greed is the biggest factor.

The original labradoodle was bred for a specific purpose, to be used as a guide dog in homes where there was a dog allergy sufferer and, even at that early stage, there were problems.

I am including a link to an article which includes a quotation by Wally Conron, the "inventor" of the labradoodle - worth reading the whole article. I found the information about Putin and his Malinois pups very interesting too.

I am not a breeder and have little to no knowledge of dog breeding but I would hope that good breeders are driven by a desire to improve the breed.
As far as I can tell the poodle crosses that followed the labradoodle were driven by a desire to cash in on a very lucrative market.

The following link will take you to an article giving the details of 20 poodle crosses

https://www.teacupdogdaily.com/poodle-breed-mixes-list/

The list is not exhaustive. Basically anything on 4 legs is fair game to be mated with a poodle.

I am not a dog snob, as I have said on a parallel thread I have owned and loved mixed breeds/mutts and would do so again.

I am first and foremost a dog lover, regardless of breed, and do not dislike poodle crosses. On my walks I meet a lovely cockapoo who is the first dog owned by a retired lady, both owner and dog are delightful. I also meet an absolute diamond of a dog from the Dogs Trust, the owner didn't realise she had adopted a labradoodle. I have also met a poo-ton (poodle x Coton de Tulear) who was bright as a button.

It is the whole industry that has sprung up around the poodle that I find distasteful and unnecessary.

The public fuel the 'poodle x anything' mania and are also responsible for the destruction of various dog breeds by demanding they look a certain way to the detriment of their health. People need to "give their head a shake" and work out what is more important - looks or purpose and health.

One of my staff works part time and trains guide dogs the rest of the time. She's just come into the office with two in training - one a black lab and t'other a GSD/Golden Retriever cross. OMG - absolutely gorgeous! (She didn't give it a silly name either - just said what cross it is)

Not a crossbreed snob, I have a Border Whippet (aka Lurcher), the problem I have is the price that's charged, when the price of the crossbreed is more than either pedigree parent! My pup cost me £100, with 1st vaccination, microchip, wormed 3 times, I know all her pedigree on both her Border Collie sides and Whippet sides and she has lots of top flyball dogs closely related to her.

There's no grey area in this for me. I've had many a fab mongrel (including a long dog whom i just called a lurcher, to save explaining!), but there is simply no reason for greeders to be producing them in such vast numbers, giving them silly names, & charging ridiculous prices for them. Or breeding runts & calling them "Teacup". There are plenty of crossbreeds in rescue, & plenty genuinely accidental litters. There are also plenty of pure breeds which will match any owner requirement. Charging a couple of hundred quid for pups from an accidental litter is responsible, churning out intentional litters is not, & i don't believe there is such a thing as a responsible breeder of crossbreeds. And then you get awful scenario where some greeders set up fancily worded schemes where basically they farm out bitches once they are past breeding age, or give special deals on pups so long as they can take them back throughout their live to breed & make money from. Totally irresponsible selection of breeds to cross also seems common ... the worst i've heard of yet (in the USA) is a "pitsky" ... pitbull x husky. Maybe i'm prejudiced ... in fact yes, i absolutely am ... but if i meet someone & ask what kind of dog they have & they tell me they have anything remotely "poo", my immediate impression is that they are a mug & contributing to the problem we have in this country. If they reply that they have a lab cross spaniel, they get my respect.
**runs off to don tin hat**

EMS no tin hat required, agree with you especially your last sentence. i have a border collie cross lab, i call her a collie cross not a collidor or other stupid name, and i didnt pay lots of money for her either....i also have a terrier cross who has 6 breeds in his makeup so goodness knows what he could be called!!!
