Are you a "helper" or a "self"?

Just wondered are you the type that mucks in in this weather? catching in, haying, getting water, lifting beds for others on your yard, or do you think there problem or do you just help your friends out?

I love my yard, did myself a rather nasty injury yesterday and friends just swung into action, sorted my horse out for me and whisked me off to casualty. Tonight I still got alot of help even though I'm well on the mend.

I think both Elizabeth and I are helpers, E. more than me 'cos of my health problems. We would never see some one struggle if we could help. But we are on a small yard, just us, the YO and 1 other livery with 2 horses. So really every one mucks in .

May I ask why you want to know?

I am on a five day full livery yard, with one or two diy'ers - and one of the girls who can always be relied on to change rugs, feed etc on a weekend - nearly broke my back when she hugged me tonight - she was obvioulsy stuck in traffic, so i caught in, lifted her bed, got her waters, did her hay nets, got her fresh straw and was just about to start relaying her bed when she turned up at 5 past 7 ! - it had taken her since 4pm to get to the yard - i thought she was going to cry!
Now at my last yard i was mega taken the P1ss out of by many others for helping and i did promise myself that i would never ever get into this situation again.

So glad i didn't

I hope I'm a helper. I am currently doing my friends two for her as she has a suspected hernia. But then everyone on our yard is I think. My YM did my waters whilst I was at work as she managed to get the hose working. All of use pull in, do haynets, muckout if someone needs it. I am lucky to be at such a lovely place

i will help people out on my yard and even my husband will help. i also have lots help if i ever need it, sometimes i will get to the yard and find that one of my stables has already been mucked out or haynets done.
no one takes the pee but we are always in contact with each other away from the yard so we know when help may be needed!

How lovely are you Gingerwitch, I think I would cry too - what a nice suprise after a horrid journey!
I would class myself as a helper, but since everyone lives v close to the yard and tends to keep to themselves there isn't much call to help out. That said, if someone is struggling with water, or if I'm up by the hay already etc then I'll help with the water or chuck extra hay down etc. Just being friendly I think. The more people happy to muck in on a yard the nicer feel it has I think.

Like to think im a helper - I ended up shovelling half of the yard to make a path to get to the fields, de- ice all the troughs (3 fields, mines only in one of them) every morning, will fill up the peoples water buckets on my side of the yard if I de ice the hose before others (no one fills mine up if they do it first though!!). Fields are not hayed though as too many horses and its all DIY so no one else wants to pay (we just limit the turnout). But if there is something I can do to help others I do it :)

GW what a lovely gesture, my friends did something similar for me last year when they were snowed in for a week (they live on my old yard).

I am a helper however there are just 2 of us on my yard so we do each others to save us both going up twice a day.

i am a cautious helper, i try to help but i do it carefully, as i have been dumped on one too many times, i don't mind helping as long as people are prepared to return the favor if it is ever needed.

I really doubt anyone is going to post to say they are a 'selfer' :D

Ahhhh if my friend saw this and could be bothered to join HHO she would happily admit to being a "selfer" as she has a full time job and children so does nothing other than her own horses and is happy to admit it! She just never expects anyone to do anything for her and if they do she insists on paying them for it, which is fair enough!

Definitely a helper but then virtually everyone on our yard is, including our YO. We all rally round for each other and no-one ever minds as we all return the favour.

In winter, especially when the weather is really bad we all help each other out by exchanging lifts to and from the yard (for those of us who don't drive), sorting out people's horses who struggle to get there etc.

When I was in hospital earlier in the year 2 friends looked after my boys for me so I could concentrate on getting better and when I was able to get to the yard, they took all the worry away by helping me out with everything until I was 100%......I returned the favour by looking after one of said friends horse whilst she was in hospital last winter.

Sorry to say that I am probably a 'selfer'! I work full time and have a family. I have two horses, it takes me all my time to get mine done, (I get up to muck them both out before a twelve hour shift as a nurse) so i am reluctant to start bringing other horses in. (I have been known to rarely though, if I have time!)

I am a helper but more for the benefit of the horse i.e. if a horse doesn't have much water I'll top it up etc. I would hope that others would do it for mine too.

How appropriate is this thread?

I am definitely a ''helper''. Today I was the only one able to get to the yard (I live the closest and the roads were lethal) and as it was my day off and i wanted a horsey day (we managed to get my mare into her trailer and to the yard so i had to sort out the stable that was being occupied by nightmare woman, who has gone completely Woop!!) and by 7.30 noone had arrived so I got down to feeding, turning out and as i had done everything else I did lifted beds and mucked out too. After the stress of the last fortrnight it has done me the world of good.

At about 6 one of the ladies turned up and was chuffed, I got a big cuddle and everything :D she had been in traffic since 3 as her school closed early (teacher) and the other girls turned up about 7 and they were almost hysterical. I think with everything that happened at the yard someone needed to pull everyone back together. It feels good but i can definitely feel it in my back, i shall be running myself a bath shortly. :D

I love helping :) I catch, change rugs, water, hay and feed my friends 2 horses every evening sometimes I muck them out if I'm in the mood :p I just enjoy it. plus she would do the same for me if I need it :)
