Are you a horse snob?

Does being a closet snob count?.I think i am a closet snob!.

Definately-I wouldnt be seen dead on the 'breed of the moment'! In the land of handsome men and pizzas (here) there is the awful tendency to have fashionable breeds. A while back it was the Spanish horses now its Fresians

Im not sure - I like to think that no matter what a horse looks like there is someone out there who could love it. Having said that I wouldnt buy a horse that I didnt find visually attractive -I think you spend too much time looking after them for it to be spent with something you dont like looking at ..

I don't think so. I like a horse to be well put-together and suitable for what I want to do but I don't pore endlessly over bloodlines...
Honestly, if the horse is a gelding, and unless it's unbacked/very inexperience, what does the family tree matter...? Unless one wanted to know for bragging rights
smile.gif

I'm not sure. If given the choice of pug ugly horse with manners to die for, or pretty pretty with a pig of a personality I'd go for the former. It doesnt matter to me what winnings or qualifiers a horse has done.. I'm a great believer in putting in hard work myself. I'm not into big horses, I'm a pony person, and get sniggered at for that. As people on here know I'm very very proud of the kid's shetland, I think he's the best thing since sliced bread. I think he's as good as any larger pony.

I wouldnt spend stupid money on a horse. I buy second hand tack and rugs. I only buy brand name stuff if it lasts longer.

Yes I suppose I am, prefer the 'small but perfectly formed' type of horse. Don't care what breed though so long as it's well put together, does the job and looks elegant. Can't stand excess body hair whether its horses, dogs, men.....

I am very fussy there are not many horses I like - I am not fussy about type but they have to be good quality for their type. I hate bad conformation in a horse and cannot understand people breeding from crap and breeding more crap.

No, couldn't be less of a snob, I have a native pony, a native pony cross and an IDxTB - so a bit of everything. I think nearly every horse has something to commend it, even if it is only good at plodding about and giving somebody confidence there is a market for that.

i wouldn't buy something very fine and light, but that isn't snobbery, or inverted snobbery, it just wouldn't physically be the right horse for me.

No. I don't really know what angle this is coming at but this is my guess.

I like to have a nice looking horse. Nice looking horses generally have better conformation which is a good think all round. However what I call a nice looking horse could be someone else's version of "Euugghhh I'd nevre have one of them" hahahahaa

I know the type that suits me, my personality, my build, my requirements etc.

I think the only people who would be horse snobs would be people who buy a flashy sharp horse when they are only a novice themselves.

The thing with horses is I don't think you can be a horse snob and get away with it.

Horses are great for showing up your weaknesses.
tongue.gif

If you buy something that is too much for you. You will come unstuck.

If you buy a nice horse and it suits you, the price tag has nothing to do with anyone else. It's all about a workable partnership. Especially if you are an amateur rider, like moi
smile.gif

I don't think I am, so long as it doesn't have conformation that will cause problems over time (having said that George has dinner plate feet!), to me as a leisure rider it is temprament, character and manners that sell a horse to me.

try not to be but when you go out regularly and see amazing looking horses its hard not to notice the difference when you see the ones with bad conformation .

I left the question open as I wanted to see what people said, if they did! Also because I had to go out and work a baby.......long-reined round the track.

See, does that make me a snob because I have an exercise track? Or a snob because I mention I have one?

Or, would you look down on me because my long reins are made of purple and yellow yacht rope and not proper lunge reins?

Is snobbery in the horse world tempered by good sense and consideration for the horses you deal with, and pride in yourself, your horse and your achievements?

Or, are we just as bad as the rest of the world and do somethings because it makes us look better than those around us?

Are there things that you see and think "No way would I be seen dead wearing/riding/using/doing that!" ? (Bring back coloured nylon string girths and matching reins?)

Does it matter to you what people think of the breed/type you ride?

Do you care what people think of your clothes/appearance? Do you make the effort to be one better?

Did you buy something because it was the trend, regardless of whether it turned out to be excellent or completely useless for the purpose?

Do you sometimes not mention what you do/do not have on HHO because you worry what people might think of you?

Possibly. Well I'd love to have a huge warmblood (there's a gorgeous one at work, and another gorgeous but smaller one at my yard) to dressage on, but I always end up with the middleweight 'bog-standard nag' type (anyone who has seen pictures of my current 'bog-standard nag' will know what I mean!)
I don't look down my nose at people on natives and Heinz types though, but I have to admit to feeling rather posh (and enjoying it) riding my share horse (rather flashy-looking Dutch-bred) past an ancient-looking pony the other day. Then again, she was cantering across the stubble field on this pony bareback, safe as houses, while mine was bucking and trying his hoof at levade - once Cooks started up I would much rather have been on the pony!
I think as long as a horse or pony does its job and is loved, there's nothing wrong with it being 'bog-standard'. So I suppose I'm a semi-snob?!

You are of course an out and out snob for even mentioning the exercise track
tongue.gif

There are some things I won't buy, there are some truely gopping jods on the market in bright colours, I wouldn't buy them because I wear plain breeches, or jeans and they would make my bum look even bigger than ever.....

I don't care that i ride ponies and am big enough to know better - I LIKE ponies and natives and really have no neeed for a massive horse with super elevation that I would need to use a big bale as a mounting block

My horse clothes, I like to look smart for shows - our placing counts on it, at home it is whatever is comfortable - jeans with some kind of polo top usually

And as for buying something because it was trendy..well only once..Wintec wide saddles came out and several riders seemed to like them so foolishly I bought one, could never get to to sit straight without rolling, so I sold it. I don't think anything else I have bought has ever gone to waste.

I think there are very few true snobs in the horse world really. Most people buy horses because they care about horses, not simply as an aquisition to impress their neighbours.

Do I get a reprieve for saying that said exercise track is at present reverting to a wilderness as the weeds are taking over and I can't keep up with it? In standard-bred land here people are surprised if properties don't have tracks!
smile.gif

Anyone want several acres of blasted goldenrod? I can't believe I used to buy the stuff for my garden in the UK!

I wouldn't say I was a horse snob - but I do have very high standards on pedigreed within my chosen breed. I want, and have, the best of the best....nothing wrong with that in my opinion, LOL!!

As soon as I saw the title on this I thought 'yep thats me'
smile.gif

Although after reading through it i dont think i am
wink.gif

I like a certain type of horse, am not a cobby person but I dont look down on people who ride them!! I bum around the yard in jeans/ jods with a polo shirt and def dont look sleek or sexy
wink.gif
In fact I look at those kind of people and wonder how they manage it!!

I am very fussy on my turnout at shows and like to look v smart
smile.gif
And i like it when my horse is complimented
laugh.gif
But who doesnt
wink.gif
And I work really hard on my riding so I do like to beat other people
tongue.gif

I am very fussy with the type of horse I go for. I have been looking for a horse for nearly a year now. I couldn't give a monkeys' uncle about what breed, just as long as it is correct.

Definitely not, when i looked at my current horses, i was more interested on how we would bond rather than how the horse looked.

The last horse i bought (Gypsy)
Gypsy.jpg

I bought her as she was being seriously abused by her last owner, she was a nervous wreck and was in a pitiful state. With her my heart ruled my head.

I'm not a horse snob and don't buy myself and my horse or pony the latest must haves in the latest colours. I'm an adult who rides mostly ponies rather than the more fashionable or flashy breeds
laugh.gif
. I am however a hacking snob, I can't stand people who gallop every where regardless of the ground, don't move over for cyclists etc, or don't say thank you to cars that slow down for then or ride correctly whilst on the roads at the very least and those who change pace without telling the people they are with, have no control over there horses letting them kick, bite or overtake. What really drives me crazy is people who ride along with their hats undone either chatting on their mobile, having a fag or listening to their Ipod.
laugh.gif

I like pretty horses, but I think there are exceptions to every breed...some are steryotypical (sp), some are gorgeous, some I just don't like. I think I am in a way but in most ways no. I like finer, faster horses but I rode this amazing 12.2hh pony and found him so so much fun!! But out of choice I would have a pretty horse, but if it ticked all other boxes then then I would probably have it!!

I would agree with you on this one Tia.

I don't think I'm snobby about either horses or people, but I do have high standards (on pedigree, conformation, movement, beauty, etc.) regarding what I will buy for myself - and I believe these standards are essential if the horse is to be used for breeding.

I get upset about people breeding poor-quality mares to mediocre stallions and over-populating the planet with sub-standard horses that end up in squalid sale-rings...
mad.gif

Well.. I have a shetland, 2 hairy cobs, one of which is coloured, and 2 other natives, so I guess not.lol...

As with everything in my life, I have what suits me at the time and because I want it not because its the latest must have or because everyone else is having them.

htobago i totally agree, my friend bought a lovely coloured mare around christmas, turned out she was pregnant. She contacted the last owner to find out the stallion, he said it could have been any of his lot as they all run in the same field.

The mare ended up having the most strangest coloured foal ive seen, its like a bay roan.
