are YOU a novice?!

I'm a novice. i can school, i can 'feel' certain things, take a quiet horse for a hack, walk, trot, canter, gallop, pop a small jump.

I've been to many shows, ridden, and won a fair few rosettes as a teenager, but lost my nerve, gave up and started to learn again.

Now I've given up again as I always feel such a numpty.

One day I will complete a x country course again.

I work with horses and it suits me as i get to know lots of different horses but don't have to ride.

I'd happily try out a horse advertised as "Not Novice Ride", feeling there's a good chance I could get on with it. If someone offered me a novice level eventer (AS IF!!) and said pop that round a novice track, I couldn't, I haven't the skill or experience. It's all relative and people have different strengths and weaknesses. I consider myself reasonably good with sharp and quirky horses because I grew up riding cheap/mad/lame ones but competitively I'm definitely a novice.

almost took the words out of my mouth.

The other thing to bear in mind is confidence. You can achieve so much when you have it.

Ok then am I a novice?

I've ridden for 10 years, worked for a dealer, backed a few ponies, reschooled my ex-eventer from scratch, reschooled an ex-trotter, sat a million broncs, taught youngsters to jump, etc etc. Can keep a fizzy horse calm and quiet or wind a cob right up and make them all fiery!

but I've never entered a competition other than 2 gymkhanas, 2 prelim dressage tests and 1 clear round jumping at my old RS.

ETA i did win them all though!!

im a novice and proud.

I bought my Welsh Sec D 2 and half years ago as my first horse after a gap of over 30 years of riding - I now know I was really novice when I bought her! She was 9 and for the first 5 years of her life had done nothing apart from have a foal or two. the next 4 years she was kept on the edge of a housing estate being ridden by kids etc. Then I bought her. Thought yes we will have riding lessons etc she thought otherwise!! I have learned sooo much from her even how to land on my bum. We have come on so much. I now take her to shows regularly and often come back with rosettes - they may be 3rds onwards but we get them. We go to Beverley riding club, we do pleasure rides. Someone I know entered her in the Ponies Uk dressage qualifer n Feb 2008 and she won.

My goal for this year is to learn how to jump properly so that I can enter in the novice working huner class and to do a prelim dressage test - im the eternal optimist!

My friends think im brave - I think Im mad!
