This winter I've had Norovirus, a cold and for the last week, the flu. Family and boyfriend insist I do too much, but I do less than I've ever done in my opinion... Yes I work full time 5 days a week, but I only muck out at weekends because I pay someone to do it during the week. I've got two horses and try to work one every day and both at the weekends. Funnily enough, recommendation from boyfriend is to give up horses - I'd rather give up washing and cooking personally! I have no intention of giving up but just getting fed up with feeling ill. I eat very healthily so not sure what else I can do. Any thoughts/experiences you can share?

I have had flu either twice since christmas, or a flu virus that has recycled itself! I have done less with the horses this winter than any other for years, as sister has had more time to deal with thim this year than previously. Never felt as flat and lacking in energy as I do this winter. I am hoping it will pass soon, hope your spell of ill health passes soon too.

I used to have this problem, but this winter have been determined to beat it. In my attempts I've been taking a daily cod liver oil tablet and drinking lots of green tea (blended with either mint or jasmine as can't stand the plain stuff) rather than normal tea or coffee (so also cutting out a lot of milk) and can honestly say I'm the healthiest I've ever been and haven't been ill at all :) Unheard of for me as I normally get bronchitis at least twice in the winter :o Obviously won't work for everyone, and might be a complete coincidence, but it's an inexpensive approach and I now swear by it.

Oh, and a cleaner, I couldn't cope without a cleaner ;)

I think there are just a lot of things going about just now. I'm a nurse and have never seen so many ill folk with flu, tummy bugs etc. I think you're doing the right things, not much else you can do x

Well, I've worked hard all my life (with horses), am really never ill and have got through this awful winter with 4 in full time and running a business. Working too hard? Good for you!

I never really get ill, but since Christmas I have had a cold, norovirus, and now another cold!
I cannot wait until this winter is over!! Seems to be dragging...

No not at all, had mild colds. The more time I spent outdoors with hoorses and the less indoors with people the less viruses I get. Buses are disgusting though, always people coughing and sneezing.

I am hardly ever ill. I had a 24 hour bug on Boxing Day, but prior to that I hadn't been sick since I was a kid.

I used to get the cold quite a lot especially when there was a change in weather. My gran bought me a big box of cod liver oil tablets to take. Since then, I have never had a proper cold. That was a good 5 years ago.

No. I very rarely get ill - I got a bit of a cough/cold over Christmas which was about the worst 'illness' I've had for well over 10 years (never bloody ill enough to have a nice break from work though :) )

I dont really every take cold/flu remedies or even pain killers often at all. I think that actually helps. My sister takes allkinds of concoctions the minute she gets so much as a sniffle and she seems to constantly be ill with ear/throat infections and colds etc.

If you are continually getting colds an flu though you should get it looked at as there could be an underlying issue

I hardly ever get ill.... think i had a cold sometime last year and 2 years before that i had a cold. Apart from that nothing. I watch as everyone at work is dropping like flies with flu, norovirus, colds etc but despite being surrounded by these people everyday I never seem to catch anything.

Probably just tempted fate now and will catch everything in sight lol

I don't get ill very often....and I honestly believe horses are to thank for that! Poo, mud, dirt, dogs, hens, sheep, grooming, mucking out...all helps the immune system :)

I also drink Berocca if I feel a bit off, seems to sort me out!

Rarely ill. For the first time ever I took a week off work the week before Christmas as spent every night coughing and sputtering and no-one wanted to catch it before chrimbo! Normally I'm fine when everyone else is ill.

I had shingles 2 weeks before Xmas, went skiing 16th Jan having just shaken it off and now have a chest infection so on antibiotics and steroids. Def skiing Europe next year as each time we do Canada/usa we get ill as soon as back no doubt from overnight long airconditioned flight ! I seem to rarely get ill except for flights ....

I hardly ever get ill, I seem to have a good immune system which I put down to growing up playing in mud and all sorts of crap and being outdoors most of the time - even now! And the last time I had a cold I caught it from being on a crowded train.

*whispers in case spoke too soon* No I dont do ill. not for years and then occasionally have a bad winter (rarely) think its the mud and dirt, good immune system:D
the only time ive been really bad for the last 2 years have been a couple of times after really good nights out , and that was self inflicted:o:(
aloe vera is supposed to be very good in general as well as some of the tips on here.

I've been like that too, I had a flu type thing mid Dec, that has never quite gone, and flared up again last week. Usually I NEVER get colds more than a Xmas sniffle, so I am pretty fed up now.

OP you could be me from that post! I have am oldie not in work too. I haven't been as ill as you though right now I feel pants and haven't ridden for 2 days. (god knows what b2 will be like when I get on him!) but i've been on and off crutches with damaged feet and ankles for about the last year now too which has really got me down.

Not ill as such, mainly because I have YEARS of immunity (comes with age lol) but feeling ever so slightly depressed despite the St Johns Wort because of the constant awful weather and not being able to get things done. I do think feeling down lowers your immunity so that could be partly to blame, as well as the fact that we tend to spend more time indoors with other peoples' germs at this time of year.

I used to have a constant cold when I was a primary school teacher! But since having the horses and being outdoors so much, I have far fewer.

A HUGE tip I can share comes from a trial I've just been involved in, which took two large samples of the public and one half got educated about how to avoid colds and flu, and the other didn't - they got something disguised as education - and their health was monitored. The long and short of it is...you pick up most viruses and bacteria from surfaces - onto your hands, into your mouth, eyes, nose. Most cough and sneeze borne bugs can't go further than a meter or so.

So: wash your hands LOTS, try not to touch your face, use an antibacterial hand gel if you can be bothered, and stay 2 m away from people with running colds if you can. I guess if you are forced into crowd situations you are stuffed, but the hand washing is the biggest key to it.

Touch wood, not a sniffle for me this winter, despite OH and both kids suffering several colds and coughs.

Thanks everyone. It seems like I get more ill since I'm not doing my own mucking out - not enough dirt obviously!!! Will start carrying hand sanitizer for people germs and accept horsey dirt as a good thing! :0)

I used to suffer with throat infections and colds without fail several times every winter. Since I started my current job working with special needs kids I've barely been ill at all, I get coughed, sneezed and dribbled on all day so I guess I wash my hands an awful lot abd use anti bac hand gel. I must have built up a resistance. My hubby who works in a huge air conditioned office is always ill with something or other!

Last time I had a cold, was ill or felt under the weather was when I was pregnant with my youngest, she's 7 this year.

I appear to have the constitution of an ox ;)

Unlike the other posters who seem to have suffered from only winter ailments, I have Fibromyalgia and have had for several years, one of the conditions is flu like symptoms, so yes I suppose I could say I am ill all the time!:(

I used to get ill all the time. It was worse when I was a WP, the 11 hour days 6 days a week then competing my own horse on my day off took it's toll i think. I also never tok time off sick so I think most of it never went properly so came back as soon as I was a bit under the weather.

Since I left I havn't been ill once and I'm now a freelance rider so still very active.

I find that if you get a bug at the start of the winter it lowers your resistance and you then catch everything that's going around. Also, people who are never usually ill tend to get hit harder when they do eventually succumb to something.
Public transport and bl*** air conditioned offices are the worst culprits for passing germs around imo.
Hope everyone is feeling better soon :)

My immune system is shocking. I'm a T1 diabetic and I pick up infections all the time, of every kind, and have to take daily antibiotics to help wane them off.

I was always getting colds/flu, but found the flu jab really helped with that. Agree with an earlier poster though in that if you get something early in the season, that normally starts snowballing for other things!

Hope you're feeling better soon, OP.
