How many of you just leave your horses for the farrier without being there?

I always make my appointments so I am there. Got me wondering as my farrier says he has never met some clients, they leave horses in and money in envelope!!!

Yup, always there for mine

(well, on the odd occasion like when I was injured for a long time, that my mother was there instead)

Always there for mine as noone else there to do them.
At work we are around to get the horses out and hold them if ness. I would say our work farrier hasn't met well over half the owners at the yard, we are a full livery yard though.

have always been there until last time as couldn't get there cos of broken wrist, but as he has been on full livery the YM took care of it. Would never leave them to it with Dragon although I know people who do, it's just not for me!

nope unless its late afternoon we leave them in with headcollars, a bucket of water out, flask of tea and some flapjack

oh and a cheque

Try to be but occasionally I cant, last time he came I made him bacon sandwich and tea, and provided some form of biscuit. If I'm not there he will put them in the field for me if I ask.

Rarely there for mine, just impossible unless it happens to fall on a school holiday. Boys are left in with headcollars at their doors and money in an envelope pinned to door. I always speak to him tho before and after

Would never consider leaving any horse for the farrier, no matter how well behaved. Have never missed a farrier visit in 10yrs (including 6 months full livery) it's just part of the package, for me!

Always there for farrier, well either i am or my mum is, i have booked fri off work especially so i can be there in the am for the farrier.

Why would it make any difference whether you were there or not if your horse is good to shoe and has no hoof issues that you need to discuss with farrier? My farrier often prefers it when owners are not there and leave him to get on with his job!

Just confused at some of the above comments. For the record I am always there as my farrier is a friend and we like a chat!

I am also surprised at some of the comments tbh

It has never actually occured to me that I need to be there when the farrier is mum cant have time off during term time and my time is dependent on work load at the time so we have never been able to be there. We planned the first couple of visits to fit in school hols so that he knew about them and we could pass on any queries.

I trust him to do a good job and handle my horses as I would like, I think he does most of his clients horses with them not there as most cannot take the time off and it then doesnt matter if he is running a bit early or late or whatever.

If I have a problem or want to discuss something I ring him.

I haven't seen my farrier since early this year!! I work full time so unless his visit falls on a day off I can't be there, but our YM is always there to make him tea and hold George if necssary. I do talk to my farrier on the phone though, he is lovely.

If I can get time off work, then yes. Otherwise I ask someone on the yard to be around in case he needs anything. My farrier says he prefers being on his own unless horse is very difficult.

Always-I can't believe people wouldn't want to be there?! Plus I am pretty sure farriers are not insured to shoe your horse with no one there. Obviously if you are on a livery yard and the YM/YO can be there thats different.

why wouldnt they be insured? I am sure they wouldnt shoe if they werent insured.

when I was at RS we used to tie the 8 up and let them get on with it, so thats what mine does now and his predecessor also did the same never worried about it (predecessor emigrated!)

Its not a case of not wanting to be there tbh though I am amazed at how many people really want to be there!

When we hd our first horse the only option was to hack to the forge. That farrier then began traveling to private customers (had always travelled to the RS's ). Have always been there for shoeing, most of the time had horses where there were no people guarateed to be around. Currently keep the horses at home (have done for nearly 15 years now), I trust the current farrier and the two previous (have only had 3 farriers in the 30 odd years we have kept horses) but I would not expect him to fetch them in, or put them out, although he does hel0 with the gate etc. Apart from thinking it quite rude to not be around,It is not a job I would want anyone doing without there being someone there if anything should go wrong. I wold not like to feel responsible for an injured farrier, with no-one present to call for ambulance etc. Anyay how would he sit in the kitchen to drink his coffee if there was no-one at home?

We are always there without fail, but our farrier says the same thing - he has several clients he's never met who leave the money for him.

Wouldn't dream of leaving my farrier on his own, not because I don't trust him not to do a good job and treat the ponies correctly.

Horses being horses, anything can go wrong and I would hate to have an injured farrier on his own, as he would be, here. Different on a livery yard with people about, but even then I always attended.

I have on occasion got another family member to hold ponies and make a cup of tea when I just couldn't be there.

I wouldn't dream of booking the farrier if I or OH couldn't be there. He's never alone as they are training farriers and there are always 2 trainees with them but I would still want or need to be there even though JB is only trimmed now no shoes

I'm always there to meet my Farrier and make him a drink but then I tend to leave him to it and get on with other things - he likes to stand and talk, rather that shoeing Athena!!!!
