Are you around for farrier?

I wouldn't have a farrier I couldn't trust to get my horse out of the stable, shoe it and put it away again if I was not there. That said 99% of the time I am there, but next week I have a dentist appointment at the same time as the farrier is coming - he looked at me like I was bonkers and told me he was perfectly capable of putting a headcollar on and taking a horse out of the stable to shoe it when I mentioned I couldn't get there that early. So that is what we will do, fine by me. Now i work from home for myself it is much easier. When I worked odd hours for a big company, I'm afraid my farrier had to get on with it and I rarely saw him. Staff would leave horse in/get him in, I would leave cheque pinned to board, farrier would book himself in for five weeks later and scribble date and time on my receipt and I would put it straight in the staff diary.

I wouldn't dream of NOT being there. My farrier and I discuss how the horse is going, any issues or adjustments that need to be made and he wants to see the horse move before he starts work and once he's finished. Ultimately, my horses welfare is my responsibility and I don't see why it should be palmed off on someone else or left to chance.

Oh dear, I am in the "leave him to it camp" I'm afraid.

Great if I can be there as we always have a good natter and we have same age children at the same school too.

But very often I just leave her in, head collar on door, haynet tied to where he will tie her and come back later to find a nicely shod horse

A few days later, I drop some cash into his house when I am next passing. My excellent farrier is very happy with this arrangement
