Star doesn't bat an eyelid at all, really couldn't care less!!
Alf barks sometimes because I think he thinks it's someone at the door.

Mt mums Dog, Buffy, hates them, hides under the bed! She's also petrified of shooting and runs home if she hears guns.

What makes some dogs so scared and some not care?? Is it anything to do with breed? Upbringing?

None of mine are, however whenever Midget was a puppy she was nearly ruined as the stupid bastards let off bangers right beside our back gate as they knew she'd be bought as a gundog and they don't agree with shooting so thought by doing that they'd put her off. Very nearly did.

Some dogs get scares when they are young, some are just more nervy than others, don't know how much breed comes into it - however a lot of dogs can be made used to the noise through positive association (playing a recording of fireworks or gunshots and rewarding them with food as their reaction begins to lessen - as I have mentioned, a friend used to break big sticks, which sounds a bit like a pistol shot, when out in the woods, and would reward her dog when he showed no fear)
Some dogs have been fussed by their owners when they stress, which can reinforce the scariness of the noise (gosh, I was RIGHT to be scared) it is better to ignore freaking out and reward calm behaviour.

Our dogs have to do a gun test so we acclimatise them to loud noises, bangs, pots, pans, cracks etc when they are young. Dogs are marked down if they 'start' or sink.

However my male does NOT like air brakes on lorries, we are going to have to do some work on that, like, erm, air brakes = cheese!

Otto doesn't give a toss about loud noises. Last year we had a firework display on the farm and he slept through it all.

5 out of the 6 of my Parent's dogs are the same.
The youngest however is not a big fan of fireworks or thunderstorms. He wasn't great with gunshot, but my Mum has worked very hard and now he works regularly at a shoot.

He has never had a bad experiance, his negative associations aren't reinforced and he has always been surrounded by 5 other dogs who are completely unfazed by it all.
He is just a sensitive dog, and although it may have a little to do with his breed, they are all Spaniel Types and have had the same upbringing.

OH parents did this even after I told them the best way was to ignore the behaviour, now they whinge every time around this year and the fact they can't go out and leave him!

A few of mine are, and I am certain that a very anxious dog can set another off, because my whippey x grey (rescue who is ow 16 and basicaly def so no probs anymore used to be petrified, as the night she was foud was a mai forework night ans she was foud with 2 frot smashed legs at 4 moths old, she was obs hit by a car and prob assosiated the whole night/injurys with fireworks, she then spread her anxiousness to our deerhound who was never bothered by them..........hence now they are both seperated from the rest of the dogs when fireworks are going off.
My pointer does not like them.......Im unsure of his past, so will never kow why

Others factors
*Owners conforting dogs even whe in the first place they where prob jsut pricking their ears and listening to the noises.
*Bad experiences(like my rescue) being assosiated with fireworks.
*Previous rescue dogs from kennels.........if you think these dogs are in the pound with alot of no doubt anxious dogs and they too all hear the fireworks going off around them, and with no escape it drives them mad, have see this myself, it's horrible.................my mam actually has sound proofed indoor kenels and keeps he radio up high so her dont hear it.
* Dogs hearing is very sensetive, so if a firework has gone off close and put the fear of god i them, they ain't gonna like them again.

Just to add from experience I find lurchers/greys/whipps and staffs take a more extreme reaction when they do have a fear of fireworks/loud bangs.

Jess (collie x) is absolutely terrified, but Beau (Lab) is not bothered at all. As for Skye,(collie x) well I will find out tonight as it is her first bonfire night with us. Luckily we haven't had any going off within hearing distance yet. (miracle--it's the first time for a long time this has happened).
Jess runs, finds a hiding place and trembles incontrollably.
Jess was a stray, so I don't know her history before we had her, and Beau and Skye are rehomes.
I have a DAP diffuser this year so will see if that helps.
Also the vet has given me some Valium for Jess but I'm really not sure whether to use it or not.
Any advice on this welcome please?

One of mine doesnt lift his head at the fireworks sleeps all night, goes out for a wee in the garden while neighbours fireworks go off. Our 2yr old GSP is so scard spends the whole time hiding under cover wont go out till the morning but when the shoot go past the farm and are shooting in the field nxt to the yard hes fine. Just fireworks that scar him.

I was told Henry was by the rescue, but so far I have seen little sign of it. He spends every evening on the sofa with me anyway, when fireworks go off he lifts his head and sometimes sits up, but nothing else so far. When he does this, I just ignore him then stroke him when he settles down again. Is this right?

Tonight my town is havng a fireworks display, so I guess this will the acid test. Wish us luck!

All of ours are fine apart from little black cocker, Willow. She hates them! Funny as she's obviously fine with guns etc and is used to being around loud machinery, Chainsaw/Strimmer/tractors etc! She shakes like mad and then runs to hide etc so she will be with dad tonight at home for some reassurance

Storm is petrified of them whereas Shadow just doesn't care.
Our old JRT was petrified of them as well (and mum made the mistake of turning the TV on and there were fireworks on the TV as well)

I've had rescue rotti cross, dalmation and dallyxlab, none have bothered about them, cats go out and I've never had a problem, horse has only been bothered once when a neighbour set off fireworks 50yrds from my stable...!!! I was not happy, no warning or anything.... It never became an issue after that night either, so far foals have also been fine but I don't want to curse that one!!!........
