Nope, it's not cold, just wet, they won't melt
I was shocked to see cobs on my yard rugged up yesterday - I had a T-Shirt & a very lightweight coat on and was roasting. I know each horse is an individual and it's up to the owner and none of my business etc, but I'm talking about overweight (by the owner's admission) traditional cobs.
Last year I did have a problem with rain scold - I think the fact horses have their summer coats not thick winter woolies so have less protection, plus the warm temperatures despite the rain, helps the bacteria gestate. I figured that putting a rug on would probably help the bacteria along! Plus T hates having a rug on and it rubs his mane, so smeared it in Sudocream, which did the job of healing it and creating a good barrier.
