Are you rugging your horses now?

Yes, just started 50g turnout run for out overnight on Arts. But she has no coat to speak of and is so much happier when kept warm. The other two never wear rugs. Pebbles in particular is starting to get coarse winter coat coming through now though.

Last week when it was hosing it down my DWB who lives out had a LW on for a few days as he was in an unsheltered paddock. It’s been off again since the rains stopped.

Still in double digits at night out in the field and will be 2-3C warmer in the barn so not thinking of rugging anytime yet. This is my favourite season - other than the sheer amount of acorns on the trees this year.

I'll rug a bit after the first clip, but my horse isn't woolly enough yet to consider that either.

i’m soft but they’re not seeing a rug yet! enjoying a few weeks of naked playing out for lily whilst the flies aren’t as bad, nothing for diva as she’s still on box rest! she gets to go out in a makeshift hard standing pen whilst i’m about, and even in torrential rain she’s not fussed🤣

scan for diva on the 19th so i’m praying she’s allowed to start going out, or at the very least vet agrees needs must even though it’s not ideal🙈

i have 2 weeks off work in oct, so will clip them both then - and use the time to organise rugs (just me that feels like i’m constantly organising rugs?!).

Mine's been rugged at night most of the summer - he's a native but fully clipped - so has mainly been in a waterproof fly rug until recently.

He's been in a combination of 0g, 0g with fleece or a 50g the last few weeks.

Awh nice to see this thread picking up again.
I haven’t even thought about rugs yet I won’t lie. I still need to send mine of to be washed reproofed oops. It’s still pretty mild down south, mine are starting to look a little fluffier coated but going to hold off with the rug for a while longer.

Close but not quite. They had a rug on a couple of times last week when rain was forecast.
The overnight temps aren’t quite low enough for them to need one if it’s not raining, and they’ve not appeared chilliy when I bring in in the morning.
I tend to start rugging when temps get to around 8 degrees.

Mines in her fly rug during the day and is naked but stabled overnight.
If sunshine and showers forecast, she can have her waterproof fly sheet on. More persistent rain, the 50g rug goes on - she doesn't like getting wet... or cold... or have flies bothering her :p

Reggie's no fill is waiting in the wings as the forecast is for heavy rain this week. I'm going to hang off as long as I can.

The other 2 are going to be without for as long as possible this year to try and manage the waistlines.

It's still double figures temperature wise here at the moment even at night.

At the moment I'm just chucking rain sheets on my two boys. Realistically they aren't in need of them, but they don't have a lot of shelter and are currently grazing quite an open part of the field, so that is the only reason why I am popping a rain sheet on each of them.

To be fair Rabbit who is just under 2.5 years old could probably go naked all winter with no rug as he's not in any work. I've gotten him to a stage where I'm waiting for him to mature mentally and physically before I start doing anything else (he takes a bit and bridle fine, wears a saddle with the stirrups up and down, used to the stirrups randomly flapping, doesn't mind me jumping around him randomly, happy for me to jump next to him/around him, doesn't care about long lines being over his back/on the ground, draped around back legs etc).

Baggs my 20 year old isn't a fan of getting wet and coupled with arthritis, I like to keep him on the warmer side of things to help his joints, but he isn't in a lot of work either (waiting for some new hoof boots to arrive and needs new saddle fitting to him) x

My thoroughbred is wearing a rain sheet (0g, no neck) most evenings now. She's on Dartmoor, so it does get particularly cold/wet/windy and it has been raining heavily and frequently here.
She won't get anything heavier until it's below double digits overnight though. I'm so indecisive about rugging and an overthinker, so I follow a rugging guide and check the weather forecast fairly religiously 😅

Hi all,
My pony lives out 24/7 he’s only been with us a few months. Wanting him to live out all winter really. I rugged him with a no fill on the days it’s been really wet, but unsure if to remove and leave off now until it’s bad again? It’s dropping abit at night, but warmer during the day, the idea of him living out is because I don’t have time to go twice a day, but this rugging at night removing in the morning is defeating the point 🤣.
Advice please? He’s a Welsh A, he usually has trees he can stand under but that part of his field is flooded. He does have a building at the side of his field he can stand behind for wind purposes

Thanks
Yes, no fill sheet on.

Caved and popped the 50g on tonight! It’s chilly at night now! Plus the wind and rain forecast this weekend…she’s living out though x

We have torrential rain and 40 mph+ winds forecast for Sunday afternoon, into the night and most of Monday so I think the newly laundered and reproofed rain sheets might have to make an appearance. Since we’ve had rain and a grass flush my Connie has lost his ribs but I don’t want him cold wet and shivering.

No rugs for mine yet. She’s a cob, bit chubby and runs warm. She has a homemade clip (currently half neck and shoulders) as she’s 4 and it was her first clip and she was getting fidgety.
Aiming to take off her girth area today as she was a sweaty mess after riding yesterday.
She still won’t be rugged yet as in a field that’s long and narrow and tree lined either side, with shelter and hay. Prolonged rain and wind I’ll put a rain sheet on but she’s happy for now.

Aim is to full clip when her coat is in and then she’ll be rugged appropriately but that will probably be November time when they come in at night.

Another, similar cob at my yard was given a 100g with neck yesterday as it drizzled a bit (approx 18 in the day and 12 at night here currently) A thin coated TB had a rain sheet when needed as he shivers in the rain.

It just goes to show that rugging is such a personal thing!
