Up until last night my TB was out in a LW (no fill) with a neck cover until he somehow managed to take it off, he has it back on tonight hopefully it will still be on in the morning.
my tb is still in ltw turnout, but we are in guernsey and its a few degrees warmer, bit wouldnt expect him him to go in mw until dec as the earliest (unless gets really really cold before hand).
I agree with hairymolly. Listen to the horse. Mine is a wuss who also drops weight over night, I have a pretty hard battle to keep weight on over winter, therefore I rug up warm, and I rug up early!! She's currently in a lw with no fill during the day, but will probably go into a MW within the next week, and she's in a 100g stable rug at night, and our stables are fairly warm. She's not clipped and probably won't be this winter, but to all those critiscising about rugging up already, well it's most likely you own horses with thick coats/natives yes? If I had one, no it wouldn't be rugged yet, but I don't and I still believe I'm doing the best for my horse.
today she has gone out in lw sheet (no filling) which is first rug for the autumn and is solely to try keep her clean as today I plan to clip her out she will then have either a good MW or even her HW as it is getting down to about 4 degrees now overnight and is rather chilly in the day and her field has little shelter especially from the wind. She is now in overnight (since Friday) so will be rugged up well overnight as well as I can normally rug her so that she only needs one clip per year
Only rug the WB but haven't even begun to consider rugging yet and she's out 24/7. It's still 18-20 during the day and around min 10 at night. Good grief, if people are rugging NOW what on earth are you going to do during the winter/when it does actually get cold???? And it's not the cold they don't like, it's the wet, and down here we're still in drought conditions
Mine are still naked - put lw on yesterday in howling wind and rain but have had to take them off as they were sweating! Not clipped yet - but will be fully clipped maybe next weekend or the one after - then it will be lw until it gets much colder.
While agree it differs ffom horse to horse it also differs depending on which part of the country you are in - we haven't had any rain for a month now - yesterdays rain turned out to be a real disappointment as it stopped almost as it started and just about settled the dust!
My little one is in a LW, Mels in a med with half neck - field v exposed on a hillside, so its 15/16 degrees outside the house, but up the road where they are its 12/13deg. Melly is full clipped and if there is little wind she is in a LW as overweight. Both in at night in a very open barn (in makeshift stables) Little one had 2 sheets on last nighgt and mels has a sheet and a 100g liner on. I would rather look to diet/exercise etc to assist in weight loss rather than have my girl clipped out and naked (as suggested by vet) to shiver it off.
Gosh reading this thread I feel cruel! My fully clipped cob has nothing on during the day and a LW (no fill) at night (24/7 turn out). He gets so hot otherwise!
None on mine yet, last night I did put a lw on my mare who is fully clipped and she was sweating underneath it when I went to take it off this morning so I will be leaving it off until it gets cold
My tb won't be rugged unless gets very cold and wet - she was out in the snow without a rug last year
mine are on 100g rugs during the night only. Naked in the day as its 3 degrees here at night but about 13/15 in the day so too hot for rugs at day time. Im in shrops.
Fleur now clipped in MW stable rug this eve and will be in MW turnout tomorrow which doesn't have a neck. She is a WB and a sensitive one at that (was waiting to be brought in at 3:30 today as she was starting to get chilly!
) and with the exposed field she is in she does need the thicker rugs a bit quicker than the rest, like my also sensitive fat WB retired gelding is rugless and will continue to be for some time yet
