Are you still in LW turnouts?

she is a irish m/w cob and her coat grows about 2in thick so long it actually flaps in the wind when i give her a trace clip there is a big wedge where the clip stops and the coat begins. A friend told me to rug early to try and stop the coat coming so thick but it made no difference at all. In the spring when she moults there is a white carpet around her after grooming for about a month.

Mine are both still naked and out 24/7. Kai will get a L/W when she has her blanket clip. Minski won't need a rug for a while yet, she's 28 doen't like rugs and has a very wooly coat.

I have to admit I am thinking of changing my girl into her 300g rug pretty soon and shes not clipped.

In my defence she has a very fine coat, really feels the cold and will drop weight overnight if she feels the cold. She has also been know to jump out the field and make her own way to her stable if she gets cold. In winter she wears a 450g rug with a full neck and if it gets really cold I will put an under rug on.

My ponio however never wears anything warmer than a 220g high neck and my previous mare would be fully clipped and still over heat in anything heavier than a 300g rug. They are all different and I believe in listening to the horse, if its cold I will put a warmer rug on no matter what month it is.

No naked, not clipped and will only have one on if I clip later but now considering not clipping this year as he's quite stiff and may be retired as only have taken him round the village as he has no back shoes on as he can't hold his back feet up long enough for the blacksmith go get them on.

Clipped one has a 100gram in the day in at night with m/w stable rug. Other 3 out 24/7 2 youngsters in l/w and other one in a m/w. They are wimps though and the other day when I left my 5 yo in his l/w over night he was actaully cold in the morning - hair on end, cold ears not a happy pony but think he is naturally a cold horse as others were fine.

Mine are in nothing. They will get breathable summer sheets if it rains on Monday. We have only had two days rain in three months!! 5deg tonight. That is the coldest night yet.

Look where I am.

Fine coated Selle F in 150g plus neck cover but only cus we are stressaging in the morning and she is more tense than usual if she's cold. (neck cover cus she's grey and I have an early start so need a little mud on as poss!! Old pony in with a thick welshy coat with no rug but snuggled in her shelter with the yearlings as hot water bottles!

Mine isnt clipped yet but I only have a no fill LW or 220g MW so since it isnt raining here I have been putting her 110g stable rug under her no fill LW turnout at night while she is still getting to stay out. She is rugless in the day.

have to agree with you there - what are you lot gonna do when it actually is winter and minus 5? Rugs don't stop horses getting hairy, the shortened hours of daylight do that. If your horses' breeding and make up mean it will be hairy - it will be hairy!!

You are quite right, but my boy never haird up last year, probably because he is old. I never used to put rugs on before the end of october, but when you have an old TB who lives out, those old rules of thumb seem to go out the window.

One of mine is staying in from tonight, gale force winds and sideways rain!!
He will be have a fleece on in stable and either a LW or LW with a tiny fill for day time.
other two are out unrugged
