The heatwave has coincided with me backing my 3 year old! Quite handy really, he is a quiet chap at the best of times but he barely has any energy to expend on reacting to anything!!
If it's super mega hot then Toto doesn't get ridden, but if it's hot but not ridiculous like today then he goes out for a slow walking hack or a short schooling session
I'm finding it reall difficult at the moment. Freddie literally sweats standing still at the moment, and not just sweating a bit...!
I haven't ridden since Thursday because I haven't been able to get there first thing or late evening... so I've just gone down in the early evening, hosed him off, maybe walked him up the lane, plaited his mane up and put him to bed.
But hopefully I'm getting up early in the morning to go for a wander round the bridleways.
I drove Merlin yesterday morning, but only for about 35-40 minutes. We were blitzed by horse flies, despite Merls being sprayed up before we went out.
It was so hot he sweated up really badly, hence the fly-strike. So I've decided that while this hot spell lasts, a gentle walk in the woods is the sum total of his work, for the time being.
I also plaited his mane this morning, to help ease him along a bit. I'll go back in the morning to check them, and take some pics - my Merls with plaits is something to behold!
It's just to hot to ride here (South Coast) so I left the boys in and took myself off to the beach for the afternoon - it was lovely, I think it is the first time I have been to the beach without the horses ...... me time!
Rode Sun at walk and all came back dripping wet Havnt rode since I am melting and got the theory that they have a fur coat to carry too!
Dont compete tho, and they are no diff for a week off. They are spending a lot of time in the pond to cool off, and under the shade in field, havnt the heart to ride them!!!
I'm evil, I ride anyway xD I don't feel the heat - I'm well aware that the horse does though Always make sure that he gets well cooled out and washed down, and electrolytes if need be
But he's quite fit now, and gets very VERY fizzy if left - despite having had his feed cut right back now... eep
Riding in the indoor though... eesh, might be shady but it's like riding in a sauna :O I actually think outdoors might be better, makes a change for me! xD
rode yesterday at 4:30 in the afternoon, it was 30 degrees, but horses are pretty damn good at sweating to keep them cool therefore they deal with the heat pretty well, they don't start to be thermally challenged until it hits 30 degrees anyway, so it shouldn't mean they can't work in it. Obviously work you would do on a hot day would be more energy expending than a colder day 'cos the body systems have added work taking blood to the surface to help cool it...
meant he got a nice hose off afterwards which he loves
Been out in Dubai and all of their horses work through it - yes they're acclimatized but that's shed loads hotter than england...
