You probably know that it's pretty hard these days to get a pony book published, unless there's a cast iron guarantee that the publishers can get a lengthy series out of it.

However, Fidra Books (who will republish the excellent Silver Snaffles and Six Ponies later this year) are running a competition for a new title to add to their list, the prize being publication. Pony books are among the things that they're looking for, though here is a bit more of an idea:

"A full-length novel aimed at the 9-14 age group and which fits with the type of books that already make up our list. You might have an idea for a 21st century Bunkle, a Highland adventure like those of Ian and Sovra, a fantasy in the Winter of Enchantment vein, a pony book or a modern school story. Your book might be set in the present day or the past, it might be written in the first or third person – a bit of research on our website will show the range of books that we publish."

For more details, please see Fidra's page on: http://www.fidrabooks.com/competition07.html

The judges include Anne Digby, who wrote the Trebizon series, Victoria Walker, who wrote The Winter of Enchantment, and me. As I'm a judge I'm afraid I can't respond to any emails or pms about the competition, but if you have questions, you can contact Fidra Books.

Good luck if you decide to enter.

Looks interesting, thanks

Hhmm, not sure I have the right mentality though........the cutesy pony books littlest disabled daughter loves reading make me feel more than a little queasy & as a child, I used to fervently hope that one day Rapide would throw that nauseatingly smug Jill into a particularly vicious nettle patch & then bolt for home, which would preferably be several miles away & as there were no mobile phones in those days......!

I've got an idea you could write something about a schoolgirl wizardess with a pet owl who rides a flying horse (I'll not charge you any comission for the idea

My pal & I have always said one day we will write our own version of Jilly Coopers 'Riders' based on our long & varied experience of the horsy scene. May be a bit too raunchy for the 8-14 year old market though!

It would seem that, further to my post the other day, there IS a market for horsey/pony stories! Perhaps I'll have a go, I have some ideas floating around in my head although synopsis and three chapters by the end of August is a bit a tall order. Could have done with a bit more notification . . . .
