Are your horses feet growing slowly or quickly.

Looking at Loobie Lous signature, it made me think as I had my horse shod yesterday, let her out afterwards, which was about dinner time and I fetched her in about 6pm and she was lame. I text`d farrier and told him and he said that he thought it may be because we have done her too early, they hadn`t really grown a lot at all, although it had been 9 weeks! I looked in my diary last week and thought `gosh its been 8 weeks` and phoned him. He said that she could`ve gone another 2 weeks yet.
Very pleased to say that this morning she trotted up the field very sound and chiro agreed that there was no lameness. Phew!
I have known this farrier for over 25 years and he is brilliant so I knew he hadnt done anything iffy.
I know of some people tho that leave their horses shoes on til they are like razors or the hooves are hanging over the shoes, sometimes leaving them on for 12 weeks!!!

My other mare usually lasts around 7-8 weeks.
Does your horse go the same time all year round or does it differ as to the different times of year. eg, spring 7-8 weeks, autumn 8-9 weeks? Or do you just book in advance every 7 weeks for example. Just curious.
Thanks, just interested.

I tend to book every 6/8 weeks depending on farriers diary, he tries to come and do most of the horses at the one time on the yard.. saves say 3 trips in 1 week. speaking of which he is coming at 7am tomorrow.. yeah!

Mine gets booked in every 6 weeks with a couple of other horses. He can go a bit longer but then it would be more of a pain for farrier to come out a couple of times a week rather than bunching us all together. Im lucky though Oscar has great feet its just everything else thats the prob

His are being done 2moro actually - thanks for the reminder!

Crikey Betty boo, your farrier gets to you early. My farrier is so unreliable but he does a brilliant job. He was booked for 9.30 yesterday, and he eventually showed at 11.10. He does this every time.

We've dropped from 7 to 6 weeks now the spring is here, but I suspect I may be ringing the farrier and getting hiim after 5 weeks. Hooves have certainly started growing faster.

Farriers been to trim ours today, he commented that our Cushiings pony's feet hadn't started growing fast yet, in the warmer weather she is trimmed every 6 weeks, but goes 8 weeks through the winter.

My cob's feet grow so quickly that in the Summer has to be done every 4-5 weeks

and can just get away with 6 weeks in the Winter........his feet are very good, and my farrier said his to well looked after!

I am amazed that so many people vary the lenght of time they get their horses shod. My horse is shod every 5 weeks on the button. In the summer when I get to ride more often, she wears the shoes out, never mind the hoof growth factor.

I am also surprised your farriers are happy to work like this. I have always stuck to a regular shoeing interval rather than wait to see how long they will last.

Just had my mare done its 10 weeks since farriers last visit and he said she could have gone another 4 weeks. Her feet dont grow much I have had her on hoof supplements for the past two years but 3 months ago decided feed her Blue Chip Dynamic instead

I agree on that tracey01, my OH used his farrier in that manner for many years, then married me and I started booking a regular appointment each time the farrier visits. Occasionally he needs to change the length by a week, but he is much happier to be regularly pre booked.

To OP. If yours had little growth, why didn't your farrier just do a tidy up?

my pony hasnt had her feet trimmed since november!!!!!! they dont grow, my farrier comes out to do my other pony and every time says no shes ok!! lol
