Are your horses in or out?

Oh how I wish I was you HMM!! I am just on my way up to get my horse in, he doesn't need to come in, the field is fine and I don't want to muck out anymore!!! :(

At my DIY yard they're in at night all year round- but whereas in the winter they come in between 3 and 4pm, as it gets lighter people often don't bring in til 7ish. :)

Bit of both. And we have a private yard so can do whatever we want!

In winter - out during day, in at night.
In summer - in during day, out at night.

And it's not quite warm enough for us to feel comfortable to put them out at night at the mo.

My DIY livery yard is pretty much do it your way rather than do it yourself.

Mares and gelds are seperate, but if it looks like there'd be one left out alone, we juggle fields a bit so they always have a friend with them out.

So Kitsune, why are they making them come in still?

I know some yards don't turn out to summer pasture until May and some earlier dependent on grass growth but with such good weather, you wouldn't want the grass to get too far ahead of them?

Well, I guess unless YO pays to have it topped.....

I have no idea. To be fair ok - we may have a really rainy April, as is traditional and it may churn the ground to muck BUT at the moment the grass is growing at a really alarming rate to my eyes. TBH I'd probably have to keep him in for another month at this rate - to let the others take off most of the good grass! Its like a bloody bowling green!!

Mine have both been out 24/7 for a week now and its AMAZING!! No mucking out/ straw/ hay etc. Av was clipped in early Feb and seems to be perfectly happy naked too. I might get them in tomorrow night though as it looks like the much needed rain may arrive and I'm a big softie!:D

Mine have been out 24/7 all winter and been naked for weeks. This has been my first full winter on grass livery and its been heaven. All my energy has gone into the horses rather than yard work. The horses have been fitter and saner than ever before.
I'll never return to stabled, individual turnout livery again. I'd rather tether them on verges than stable, having seen how happier they've been.

Fany is now out during the day and in at night as of today, she will put on weight too much if out 24/7 at present. Cappy won't go out until at least May. He simply will not stay out at present, too wet.

FDC

all though they can stay out 24/7 my 2 are in most nights still - occasional niht out - mainly due to baby and her weight. over next 2 weeks they will change and come in during day and out at night due to flies and babys sweet itch lol :)

horserider so with you being out 24/7 all year and hopefully in future i will be able to do this - baby would be so happier and i can regulate the grazing area and murph would be cool with a rug in winter - mmmmmmm bring it on :)

Ours went out on Thurs 24/7 and will be out until 1st Nov when they will be in at night! I might bring ours in during the day if we have a really hot spell!

Out, out, out! Most haven't actually been in all winter, all I have in are just a couple of Boarders, and more recently two infoal mares. They are still all in at night.

Some of them this morning, it is beginning to dry up now, and (about bloody time too:mad:) things are greening up! It has been a long winter, it was only10 days ago that the 3rd signature was taken.

I'd rather everything was out myself (because I hate mucking out) but if people want to pay me to stall their horses then that's fine by me:D I don't care whether horses are in or out, everything is frozen solid for months and the grass never comes through until mid April at the earliest so it isn't a case of saving the fields, up to our ankles in mud but give it a week or two and it will be a dustbowl again.

Out - been out all winter and fine - one is now finally at the right weight - its taken him all winter to lose it. on private yard so can do as I please - been on very controlling livery yard before and it drove me nuts - I work full time and wasnt able to be around when people started bringing in or not turning out - I also couldnt compete with the competetive mucking out for those that have more time on their hands!

My hairy boy is out but he is 24/7 so doesn't really count!
The horses at work are in at night as grass still isn't grown enough to have them all out all the time. Hopefully one day soon they will be out all night, sometime in May usually.

Our YO is a farmer, not at all horsey and as long as we don't trash our fields he lets us do pretty much what we want. Some have been out 24/7 for a couple of weeks now but most are still in at night. Mine don't do out at night until much later as they would get way too fat out 24/7, the chubbie connie rarely goes out 24/7, he is either out day or night depending on the weather.

Mine were turned out on Sat night for the first time, fetched them in at 11 on Sunday, and back out by 5pm - now they will be out around 7/8pmish after being ridden, out until about 12 - 1 ish the next day when they come up for a few hours off the grass so i can work them when i finish work. They could stay out 24/7 and probably will once the flush of grass has stopped - i have even fenced off a third of my paddock and the boys still are not making any headway ! and it takes mine all of a day to adjust to being out more than in - they soon let me know when they want in though.

Isnt it great being in charge of your own horses well being - the yard i am at is 2nd best to having them at home

I am lucky enough to be on a yard which allows 24/7 365 days a year, most bring in through winter though.
Anyway, most horses have been out about the last 3weeks day and night, joining my mare who lives out permanently...
