Are your horses insured?

Are you insured?

Yes. Competition horse insured for £47 a month, but after hearing all the horror stories on here I am seriously considering banking the money in a separate horse emergency account.

My boys are not insured, I feel it's a rip off. You would be better saving the money for the rainy day when it comes. My liability insurance comes from BD membership, I think this insurance is essential as bills from that could potentially be in the millions. Just my opinion.

Only for public liability, with the Good Horsemanship Society (to avoid all argument about being covered for bitless). Savings for vet's bills.

1 is and 1 isn't.

Manni is on loan to me and therefore part of the contract is for him to be insured. I pay £40 per month with Petplan. That is for 'fully comp'.

Jay, we have only just bought, and he is not insured - although we are members of the Pony Club and the Countryside Alliance and so there is some insurance there - 3rd party etc. We feel that if he has any vet bills in the future, we have money to cover them. I think insurance is extremely expensive and so would rather save the money myself to cover any eventualities.

No.

Old guy is now too old to be insurable but have never had him insured. His predecessor likewise was not - we used to have them insured and then worked out the premiums just were not worth the cover. New one - I just called for a quote and the premiums would be over £2k a year to cover loss of use (they only pay out 60% of value) death etc and vet fees up to 5k per issue - so figured I would be better of putting the money aside instead. I mean how can that possibly be worth it - not a cheap horse but not eyewateringly expensive either - the premiums came to over 15% of her value per year :o
Do have public liability through BD though.

Yes NFU cost about £35 a month. Had him about 2 years and so far have claimed £5000 on vets bills. If I never claim again I am still quids in.

Yes always have a horse insured for all vet bills and around £5000 if they die as this would by a decent youngster. Used to be with Petplan but they were awful so now with NFU.

Pony was insured but when renewal came, couldn't afford it. Ideally when I'm better off he will be insured again but at the mo we're just struggling to afford to keep him. Have public liability through pc & if get vet bills then the credit card will have to come out!!

The two younger horses are insured the two retired horses both in their twenties are not .Have third part on everything.
Insurance is based on the 'fear factor' of getting a big bill.
I do feel sometimes having insurance forces us to go down an avenue or to take action more quickly than if there was no insurance .
I had an indeterminate 1/10 lameness on one of riding horses hind put on bute and then taken off then after 3/4 weeks the insurance wanted a referal for full lameness work up because he had had an injury 4 years earlier on that leg at stifle .The xrays were inconclussive .
Sent home booked to return a week later for more checks to be kept off bute then a week later a massive abscess erupted in that foot horse now fine and sound .The bute had probably delayed the formation of the abscess.
If it had been one of my retired horses uninsured I probably would have turned away and monitored for a few weeks to see what deveeloped.
To fullfil the insurance terms I had to take quick action or risk invalidating the insurance.
I have paid over £10,000 over many years on horse insurance and have claimed in total around £2500.
I am seriously considering not insuring and puttin the £800 a year into a savings account for emergencies.

I created this post as my two aren't insured and I was wondering if I was in the minority. Can't insure either of my two's legs and the monthly charges are extortionate! I put some money away instead, just in case and if we're talking big bucks, I'd raid the business!! LOL! I'v got BHS gold membership though so I'm covered for public liability.

BHS gold membership for pub lib & a rainy day fund which is never lower than the cost to have him PTS, as he has suffered so much bad treatment (abuse ect..) in his past & is very untrusting unlesshe knows you very well that if he required major treatment i would rather he was PTS & just remembered our love than undo all the hard work with him & he go back to fearing everything.

ive been called evil for this outlook but i dont care as he is my baby & my choice. previous was insured for everything though (& god did he need it! accident prone sod)

Evil??? I think that's responsible!!!

1 with NFU £100 pm and 2 with Petplan - i think around £35 each. Little companion pony is uninsured and tbh I have had the vet to him twice for laminitis and owned him 16 years so a good decision methinks.

1 horse had £5,000 claim first year I had her - I have owned her for 3 years now. Young WB has had nearing the same for 3 seperate claims - had him 8 months!

Wouldn't be without it!

Neither of mine are insured. I have BHS Gold though.

My comp horse used to be insured but after a bad couple of years everything was pretty much excluded so I decided to bin the insurance and bank the money. Glad I did as I've spent a fortune this year on an ailment that wouldn't have been covered.

We ended up with all cardiac and respiratory ailments excluded, as well as allergic and skin problems after he had a virus which played havoc with everything (moral of that story - quarantine EVERYTHING that comes to your yard!) and a tendon problem followed by a rumbling fetlock (never got to the bottom of it, he came sound on his own), and them him jumping out of the arena and bashing his knee meant all lameness was excluded too! Not a lot of point keeping him insured after all that!!

Both of mine are with KBIS - I pay yearly but cant remember how much exactly, all I know is that it wasn't cheep!

Boy (retired) - just 3rd party
Girl (2 y/o) - everything

Yes. Carriage House and is £45 a month (over 10months). I was with NFU but they doubled my premiums so I changed.

No. Never had them insured since having 1st one many eons ago.

I have BHS Gold membership, a squeaky clean credit card - and a small nest egg in the bank which is there for emergencies if required - which is added to on a monthly basis out of my salary.

Petplan
Insured for:
Vets Bills, Public Liability, 3rd Party.
But not LOU or Death.. After trying to claim for LOU/Death on my last mare, and the insurance company refusing to pay out I see little point in it.
If you can't afford to have your horse PTS in case of an emergancy, then you shouldn't have a horse IMO.

No neither of mine are, I put money in a savings account for emergencies and have PL through my BRC membership. If a bill ever comes to more than I have put away then my vet let's me pay in installments although this hasn't happened yet *touch wood*

Both mine are and honestly not sure if either of them would be still here if they weren't
Mare has had extreme infections of her eyes and punctured tendon sheath so probably about 5,000 with nfu
My gelding who is very likely never to be ridden again 10,000 worth of claims in three years !! One for trying to save his eye and the latest for infected navicular bursa and tendon both came to over the insurance limit!
I could not be without it there is no way I could of saved that amount of money or ever been able to pay it back!!

1 is insured with nfu. he has been insured with them for four years at £35 a month. in this last year i have claimed upto £4000 of vets bills but prety much everything will be excluded now! The renewal is next month and im expecting a big hike! Im not sure if i will insure him again tbh. i think i might just put away into a seperate acount. but knowing my luck il have a disaster!
my mare isnt insured. I have got a claim from kbis for £27 a month but for only upto £3500 vets fees and they have excluded colic as iv had a vet visit for it. i dont think i will go through with it and will just put £30 a month away and any extra cash lying around in there.

what confuses me is that your insurance is there to pay your high vets fees etc.. but.. my vets t&c's is that i pay it upfront and claim it back myself.. well is that not a reason you have insurance? to pay for high vets fees you cannot afford. if i could afford to pay it upfront i wouldnt bother with insurance...

oh and i have bhs to cover all that jazz!
