We are looking into building a 20 x 60 arena however we are on top on limestone so we can only dig down a foot or so before hitting rock. This in itself isn't so bad but I'm struggling to come up with a drainage outlet solution as there are no drains close enough to use and because of the rock I don't think we can get down far enough to put in a soak away without it being really wide. Any advice/ideas? We are on land that is flat then gently slopes away about another acre outside of our boundary.
 
Not an expert but could you 'build up' the level with quarried stone so that it drains through & you can pipe away? I would get a local ménage builder/groundworks person to have a look and advise you as land that you think is flat is probably not...!
 
Ours goes into a small pond that joins a boundary ditch. But I agree it's worth getting a few ménage specialist companies in for advice and quotes.
 
Ours goes into a boundary ditch. How wet is the land now? Surely the limestone drains well? Our arena has 6inch of stone and 6inch of sand. As my dad says allowing for 50% permeability it should be able to absorb 6iniches of rain before any puddles appear.

OH says you could create a big gravel drain to the side as a soakaway and just make it long and wide for the water you drain into as a soakaway as you don't have the depth. He says Google permeable driveways and look at their solutions. (He's a civil/geotech engineer and did the drainage for ours this summer)

Why do you need drainage if on limestone it will drain naturally.
