.....are you given 4 penalties for having a pole in the 'Show Jumping' stage however when you ride the 'Cross Country' Stage you can knock as many poles over as you want & don't get penalised?

I was out at the weekend & my daughter went totally clear over both sections & then someone else rode round & had 4 poles in the Cross Country Section & was given a clear round? This doesn't seem fair to me, can any one explain why this happens? :(

Any arena events that I have attended do give penalties for knock downs in the cross country section - that does seem unfair.

Well done to your daughter for having a double clear :)

Presumably its designed to replicate the rules of eventing as closely as possible. I.e. if you touch a fixed xc fence at a proper event, it won't fall (unless of course you have a horrific accident) and therefore no penalty accrues. It seems reasonable to me. But only if the xc element isn't judged by reference to fastest time - it should be judged against an optimum time. Otherwise, it does encourage crazy fast riding in which case you should be penalised for having poles.

Its an optimum time at Weston Lawns and yes poles down in the XC phase doesn't count. They always done it that way. They do also run a dressage phase so scoring reflects actual eventing.
