Arena fencing

Has anyone had an arena fence replaced? I trying to get some idea of cost. Our DIY fencing made from pallets has started to rot and fall over so need to replace it but have no idea how much this would cost. It is 40 x 20m

Sorry to hi-jack your post, but I was just thinking of using some pallets to make an arena fence. Apart from the rot, did it make a reasonable fence? how many pallets did you need for a 40 x 20? and how long did it last before the rot set in?

NAAC 2023 prices for post and 3 rail was about £25 a meter IIRC. So you’re looking at a minimum of £3k plus any cost for removal of an old fence. If you want hard wood rather than treated soft wood expect to pay more but it will last you 25 years rather than <10.

We used extra large pallets and not sure how many we used. It was put up 10 years ago and was at tge time a cheap option.

Dont fence it - they are so much better without a fence to ‘lean’ on

This was where I was heading. If you must keep horses on it or off it, use electric fence placed far enough back so that you can't get shocked while using it, or remember to turn it off when you're on it. .

I know of a rider paralysed by falling against the post and rails. Please don't fence.

I recently went to a yard friend had a lesson there and his arenas and fields had wooden posts but the rails were made of this thick plastic stuff, it was a brown colour with ridges on it looked really hard wearing and might be cheaper than wood.

We have post and rail round our outdoor school, have replaced it but years ago. Prob be about 1500 - 20000 if we did it now.

More expensive than wood but can be worth the investment for longevity - composite plastic fencing!

I have wooden posts with 40mm brown electric tape on the outside. It still looks smart and keeps the horses off the arena from the grazing but was an awful lot cheaper!

I have plastic electric fence posts and tape all around my grazing areas, all wired up to batteries and I have the same set up surrounding my arena, but not connected to any power source. My horses definitely do not 'lean' on the fence!

How about wooden posts and that wide electric tape between the posts? Or no fence?

The arena at our yard has only one end fenced, it's one of the 20 mtr ends. One of the 40mtr sides has the stable block forming one side the other 40 mtr side has a bank of earth that is now covered with grass. One 20 mtr end has another earth bank, covered with grass & the remaining 20 mtr end has a fence because that is where the yo's house & garden are.

With a view to safety. Back in the day we had the "school" surrounded by high banks with a fence on the top of the bank. If you came off you were likely to fall on the bank going that way rather than on top of rails. Fencing is extremely expensive now. I paid (cost) over £500 for a 100 posts last year.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Post and tape might work but would need good boards to keep the sand in and rhe nettles out.

Simple post and rail is c.£20 a meter - with boards to keep sand in, it'd me more than that.
