I was super lucky to have a sand and rubber arena built in summer 2013. At the time, the contractor recommended using a keep-a-level grader to maintain the surface, but to be completely honest when we looked at the price we nearly fell over backwards.
Needless to say we didn't have much cash left over after the build so my husband copied a basic leveller design (the metal gate style with prongs on one edge that you can drag behind a quad) and welded together our own version.
This seemed to do the job quite nicely, but after a while I could notice that there were uneven areas where there would either be a scattering of rubber with sand quite visible (especially when the surface is dry) or areas where the rubber feels a lot deeper (not horrendously deep but obviously a lot more rubber than other areas).
So I had a good dig out round my edges last summer and redeposited the rubber to the areas which looked low on rubber which obviously helped. However i am noticing the rises and falls of the distribution of rubber again and I am wondering what the long term solution is.
Do I need to buy an expensive leveller? I presume that grading an arena isn't rocket science, but could it be that I am doing it wrong somehow?
I feel so fortunate that I have an arena but I am now slightly paranoid that I could be ruining the surface, if that is indeed possible?
Any advice or help would be gratefully received
