I had an arena built at the start of the year, and it's fab, but I need something to level it with.
It's sand with a rubber topping, and until now I have been dragging over my 30 year old harrows to smooth it over. Unforunately, afore mentioned harrows have seen (much) better days and I need something better. What does every one else use?
I have been looking at graders/levellers on the internet, but not sure what would be the best. Certainly don't want to spend too much, it's only used by me. It'll be towed behind a quad.
The arenamates look great but a few to many £££ At the moment there is a large build up of rubber around the edges which needs spreading

So, what do you all use?

we pull the sides in by hand and then pull an old gate around, works a treat wouldnt dream of spending money on something else

we also use a gate, if u tow carefully you can go right up against the sleepers and it drags the edges in. sometimes we find it is a bit too light though...so we balance on it...new sport of sand surfing!! its a lot of fun!

People have mentioned to use an old gate, wasn't quite sure if it'd work, I do have one that I could use, not sure how I'd manage to manover it though, and wondered that it'd make it level

we find it does a pretty good job...perfectly good enough, but is very good with the extra weight on top, especially in the summer when its dry!

Arenamates are fairly pricey, but well worth it!! I love mine - I would really recommend saving up and getting one - when you have spent a lot of money on a surface I think its worth spending the extra cash on a leveller that is going to do the job well - I was pretty poor for a while, as I had to buy a quad too, but I would spend the money again if I had to! Gates etc do an adequate job, but even if you don't go for an arenamate, I would buy something that is designed to do the job.

i've got something i bought from oaksmeadow, it is like a gate but with angle iron on one side (to bring sides in) and very solid 2" spikes on the other, for raking - i use this side all the time. i find it does a very good job, was pretty reasonable iirc.

We use the same thing as Kerilli only ours was free cos we made it with wood and long fencing nails for the rake!

OH's next one will be an attempt at something like the arena mate but home made now he has a welder

- not sure he knows that yet and he has the lorry to finish first, and a shed to build

Kerilli, I have seen those for sale at a relatively good price so will look further into that, thanks.
Miller, can I just borrow your OH to make me one too

Note to self, must find a useful OH

Honestly a good leveller is worth it's weight in gold!

I used to use harrows, but as it didn't bring in the sides (no way was I doing a 60 x 40 by hand), and did a crap job TBTH. So invested in a Logic Pro Grader................wow, it makes a HUGE difference the surface looks perfect everytime I use it. Was £1,600 though

BUT well worth it.
