I need help!

Our yard is currently having its arena surface taken off and a new surface put on, can anyone recommend good surfaces that are not too expensive (we are based in Surrey)?

The drainage is all done and the arena is just over 20x40

For the last few year we have had a wood based surface but with a lot of use this breaks down, so we would like to look in to something else.

The yard is rented so we do not want to spend too much on the surface!

dont put rubber down. extremely UN environmentally friendly. it leaches a frightening amount of toxins into the water table and would seriously pee off the local council and water authority if you are near a stream. furthermore, they are horriffic to ride on in summer - they stink when they are hot. AND, it will be impossible to dispose of when it has had its time, with new legislation concerning the disposal of rubber.
I would suggest a decent sand surface with something mixed in with it - there is loads to chose from depending on your budget. You have to be careful with sand though, and to give a good surface, you have to get the type and depth absolutely spot on. Otherwise it will be like riding on concrete, or through water.
or go for another wood surface but NOT recycled wood as this is already old and breaks down far too fast. go for a surface which has been made from specifically grown and harvested (and re-planted!) trees.

Muddywellies Can you direct us to anything to support your claim that rubber is unenvironmental. Considering the amount of rubber released every day by car tyre wear, I am surprised at your claims about toxicity. Also it is not the age of the wood that is important. It is the tree species. Recycled wood from a suitable species will still outlast new wood of the wrong type regardless of how it is sourced.

I do like rubber surfaces but have heard that recent research is linking suspensory damage in horses to rubber surfaces as the horses legs get 'stuck' on the rubber...dont want to bore you all with the finer details. I would love a mix surface but dont have 10k to spend!!

I was looking for info on local suppliers more than anything!!
 
Interesting thoughts muddywellies and mike007,maybe we should all think a bit more before we resurface our arenas.
Pearcider have you had a look on ebay ? if you put in equestrian surface it comes up with a few ideas and people who deliver around the country.
