We are thinking about refurbishing an existing 20 x 40 sand school, by extending it to 60 x 30 and adding some rubber or something.
What I want to know is has anybody redone an existing arena and what were their experiences, also what surfaces do people recommend and prices. The arena is really free draining but existing surface does move and track so gets heavy in places we have no tractor and just rake it by hand. It's just for us only four horses but in daily use. I'm worried because we aren't starting from scratch we'll end up with a bodge job.

My old YO had a 20x60 woodchip which needed redoing - she had a contractor with a digger scrape off the old surface, replaced the membrane (was in tatters where the surface had gone deep ad ponies ripped it. She then put down silica sand and rubber chunks and loves it.

She had paid alot on the drainage etc when first built and had a cheaper surface knowing she would have to redo, so only work was membrane and adding new surface

We had our 20x40 extended to a 20x60. I was really worried before hand as the arena had always been good to ride on with no puddles or patchy bits. Mark Scott arenas did ours, they scraped back the old surface and replaced the fencing and kickboards which were rotten. They did a fantastic job and the whole arena rides really well, there is no difference when going from the old to the new part.

I have silica sand and Spring-Tek rubber on mine.............absolutely fantastic
