arggg Worms

Am really upset. My new girl (who is arriving next week

) has a huge worm burden poor lass

. I'm not going to go into the 'politics' of whats happening at the riding club but am so upset about the state of my baby atm and just feel like crying

.

I am aware of the dangers of worming a horse with such a huge burden and really am not sure how to approach this in the best way. I am obviously going to take my vets advice but thought would ask if anyone has any experiance/tips?

I would use Panacur equine guard to start with, this is fairly gentle and will remove some of the worm burden over 5 days so you shouldn't get the mass worm death that is the worry with horses with a high worm burden. I would then follow this up (10 days or so later) with Equest/Equest Pramox to remove resistant worms and those not covered by the Panacur. I would monitor her with worm egg counts and get her onto clean pasture and enrolled in a routine worming regime. Keep an eye out for loose droppings, dull stary coat and weight loss. Your vet will be able to give you a plan of action though, good luck with her.

Thank you for your advice Dr_Spring and for wishing us luck. The proverbial has hit the fan at the riding club she is coming from and I have taken her out now so she will be ariving tomorrow morning
