Why is it that, while there are many lovely people, the horsey world seems to attract some serious morons!! I have a lovely small yard, with a couple of liveries (friends) and my own horses, and I've been looking for someone to help out as I also work from home and travel occasionally with work. At first I tried employing people as part time grooms, but they have all been pretty useless - unreliable, never on time etc.
As I have a spare stable and lots of grazing, I thought the ideal situation would be to offer someone livery for their own horse, in exchange for some help with mine as that'd then help ensure that they actually come up every day as they'd have to care for their own horse. It'd only be turning out or bringing in one or two horses a day, mucking out 1 some weekends and covering holidays. I also offered to pay extra of course for anything above and beyond the exchange for livery. I thought this would be jumped on, as the yard is great and has great facilities, and there really isn't much work to be done - it could fit around a reasonable full time job too, or someone who's a freelance instructor or something like that.
Anyway, I've had literally no normal people get in touch! I've had a woman with 5 children and 6 ponies ask if they can all come, numerous 13-17 year olds telling me how much they love horses although they don't have their own but they'd love to learn - despite the advert saying 18+ and must have own horse - Lots of people who don't actually have a horse, various other people with more than one horse trying to get them all in for free and one special one who actually came round to look, loved the look of the yard and then said she couldn't commit to every day, but could I look after her horse in the mornings as she has to go to work early?! Argghhhh!
Sorry, just had to vent my frustration! If anyone has any recommendations of places to advertise this - do let me know. I've tried Preloved, Equine Adverts, YardandGroom....
