Why is it that, while there are many lovely people, the horsey world seems to attract some serious morons!! I have a lovely small yard, with a couple of liveries (friends) and my own horses, and I've been looking for someone to help out as I also work from home and travel occasionally with work. At first I tried employing people as part time grooms, but they have all been pretty useless - unreliable, never on time etc.
As I have a spare stable and lots of grazing, I thought the ideal situation would be to offer someone livery for their own horse, in exchange for some help with mine as that'd then help ensure that they actually come up every day as they'd have to care for their own horse. It'd only be turning out or bringing in one or two horses a day, mucking out 1 some weekends and covering holidays. I also offered to pay extra of course for anything above and beyond the exchange for livery. I thought this would be jumped on, as the yard is great and has great facilities, and there really isn't much work to be done - it could fit around a reasonable full time job too, or someone who's a freelance instructor or something like that.

Anyway, I've had literally no normal people get in touch! I've had a woman with 5 children and 6 ponies ask if they can all come, numerous 13-17 year olds telling me how much they love horses although they don't have their own but they'd love to learn - despite the advert saying 18+ and must have own horse - Lots of people who don't actually have a horse, various other people with more than one horse trying to get them all in for free and one special one who actually came round to look, loved the look of the yard and then said she couldn't commit to every day, but could I look after her horse in the mornings as she has to go to work early?! Argghhhh!

Sorry, just had to vent my frustration! If anyone has any recommendations of places to advertise this - do let me know. I've tried Preloved, Equine Adverts, YardandGroom....

Where abouts are you? I'm sure you'll find somebody - sounds like an ideal situation, but just like with everything else you have to wade through the timewasters to find the right person.

Oh dear haha, I SO know what you mean. The replies to my advert for my TB who is a little sprightly to put it nicely at times have been just unreal. I've got to the point that I just can't even be bothered almost to open the "you have a new message" emails because I know the sender will be a person who's just learned rising trot and would like me to pick her up daily from 20 odd miles away!

I'm near Canterbury in Kent. I'm hoping someone suitable will eventually emerge from the sea of time wasters!

M_G haha I like to think I'm normal!

Poiuytrewq - sounds familiar, I was also advertising a 3yo warmblood needing exercise (until recently sold) and had numerous novices and people 'getting back into riding' who obviously had a death wish!

Mm, tempting sometimes isn't it!
My favourite was off a "very knowledgable horse woman" who wanted to use him as a lead rein pony for her 3 year old who showed a keen interest!!!!

Could you reword the ad, maybe it is not reading right, add the horse and stable last, big emphasis on the actual work required after all having your horse at work is a bonus but not the reason for the job.

I saw your advert on preloved, I live in ash so really close to you. I'm 16 so was gutted that something like this couldn't come up just a couple of years later when I'm older. I think it's a great offer and I hope you find the right, genuine person soon! :)
