Really not doing well at the moment, it's one thing after another!

New boy got into field with mare (in season) and mounted her. too far away so couldn't see if it actually went in...
How can I find out if he has been gelded properly, and how soon will I know if she is in foal??

Hi,
I have a miniature mare that I thought was bred ,had a full
udder and just waiting it out . Surprise !
One of the children came yelling in the house that our
mini gelding was jumping on her back ,sure enough
she was in heat ,
So one phantom pregnancy and one gelding acting the stud !!
He'd been gelded as a 2 year old late last year ,so I am thinking its just an old habit and hopefully he will get over it .
The mare then decided she wasnt pregnant and her udder
slowly went down without the need for anything .I took her back to the stud .
She is now bred ,our gelding hasnt l told me otherwise .

so we wait and see

I wouldn't start to worry yet. I have seen quite a few geldings mount mares whilst in season. On several occassions penetration has occured but there were definately geldings and incapable of fathering foals.

Many geldings still do this as occasionally....my boy for instance will do it if the mare lets him and has properly covered her....but he was 110% definitely gelded.

Given the opportunity, my gelding will cover mares 100% of the time if they are in season - he is definitely a gelding, but I believe he was cut late. He's 17 now, so has never grown out of it!!

I'd be more concerned about the fact that a horse inexperienced in covering will often end up penetrating in the 'wrong place' - which is actually incredibly dangerous and can be fatal for the mare. So fertile or not, I would not want a gelding who is attempting to cover anywhere near my mares!

My OH's 17 yr old gelding will mount mares, he is too dumb to work out what happens after that though - he usually has his bits tucked away when he does it....

I have these visions now of dead ponies dotted around the forest
