We got 38.4 which for Hamlet is quite respectable. However, I was quite shocked at how tense he was and was rather surprised we managed to pull out the score we did with all the headshaking he was performing! I am thinking of giving an oxyshot a go and see whether it will help to relax him. The problem is he doesn't do it at home (or very rarely and just a little bit) or even at lessons away from home so it's not somthing we can work on in training.
It seems truly tension/anticipation related and it almost seems like some form of headshaking. He warmed up nicely at first but got tenser and tenser when I asked him for more.
Nevertheless, he allowed me to contain his tension to some extent and was very acurate responding to most of my aids. He didn't work through though and didn't accept the contact properly hence mostly 6s and a couple of 7s (for canter transitions).

Show Jumping: 12.02pm
Back to the lorry. Quick change of saddles, tendon boots on and off we went to warm up for the jumping. I would much rather have more time in between the phases as felt a little bewildered by everything being in different places. I am sure I will be more chilled about it next time but today I found it all very rushed. I only managed to see one show jumping round and didn't walk the course (but then it didn't seem to be a habit to walk a SJ courses at events...??). Anyway, I will make sure I have a good look next time!

The course was small and inviting but built on a cirular pattern which required quite a lot of obedience from the horses. Hamlet jumped well in the warm up, was very positive and forward thinking. Unfortunately, he was also very, very strong and I found it mega difficult to keep control over his canter and negotiate the circular pattern in the same time!
We might try a different bit for the show-jumping phase next time as I have very limited stearing and the whole round was well too wild.

And here is how we got eliminated (technical elimination so we were allowed to go XC)...
5.
munsteadBEIntro-march08019.jpg

I was approaching the last combination - fence 8. Hamlet was powering forward and while I tried to regain some control he managed to drift to the right. As a result of me trying to slow him down and fight for the better line in the same time we arrived at the oxer on a very short stride and jumped so close to the right wing that despite of me kicking on to the last vertical he didn't really have much of a chance to jump it.
We circled away and I stared at the bottom of the fence to see if it's marked a and b. You see, in pure show-jumping you would always have it marked that way and when I didn't see the letters I thought I better jump the second elemnt on an angle :-0. What a stupid thing to do!

The moment I was in front of that vertical and saw there was no sign on it whatsoever I realised that was it

I have no idea why the hell I thought that one strided double might be treated as seperate fences! I think I got confused with XC when you can have a one strided combination treated both as seperate fences or as a combination. I tried so hard to remember all the XC bits and pieces that all my SJ knowledge dissapeared
frown.gif
I was very dissapointed with myself, I must say!

XC - 12.55

After changing into my xc gear, changing Hamlet's boots etc I only had about 10 minutes left to my XC start time. He was so strong I started to worry I would be all over the place out there! Tried a little canter but we got a full run straight away and had to bridge the reins to go back to trot.
Took him over the warm up jump - a palisade and he just cantered past it! Well, this time I knew he was just taking a mickey so gave him a couple of quick slaps next to my right leg (as it's my weak leg and he seems to take advantage!) and he didn't dare to drift after that. We jumped the palisade a couple of times, then the roll top and he was definitely on a mission.

Friends who work with me at one of the riding schools in London came over to say hello and to watch us and think they secretely fell in love in Hamlet!
wink.gif

He is indeed a very likable chap
smile.gif

To sum up - it was an interesting experience, I wish I could nip some more horses and get more events under my belt.
I regret there is a big fat 'E' next to Hamlet's name on his BE records now as he was fantastic XC, bold and jumped everything I asked him to jump.
We live, we learn - onwards and upwards.

And you will never forget it but will learn from it, I was big E last year at Upton after Saf stopped and I gave her a smack, she galloped off in a huff and they E me for being unsafe to go XC as out of control, I cried at the lorry and had nearly 3 hr drive home

Hope you don't feel too bad, where is the next one and good luck

Well done, I got eliminated sj last year at tweseldown unaff, was frustrating and I wasn't allowed to go xc!
It's all about practise really.

Oh dear, I didn't know they can do that
frown.gif
Our next one is probably Borde Hill so long wait!

Talking about out of control - I saw quite a few today - one jumped over a buggy with a child basically two steps from our lorry - big coloured horse.

Aww poor you. Its so annoying when its your own fault you get eliminated! I got myself eliminated at the last event of last season - horse had done a lovely SJ round clear and I knew he could go clear round the XC so was looking forward to another BE point by getting a double clear. Well, being a twat there was a corner hedge thing, but it was oddly shaped so you could also jump a different part further along, at the same venue a few months before at their big event we were allowed to jump either section so I assumed the same again. Unfortuately what I hadnt noticed was a 2nd red flag on one section... I didnt even KNOW you could have more than 1 white and 1 red flag!!! So Although I jumped in between the main flags, I was to the left of the 2nd red which eliminated me. Horse jumped a super clear otherwise as well! I was gutted when I heard back at the finish! Worst thing is seeing a big fat E on his record, when it was a TECHNICAL one.

I am queen of techincal elimination every E you see by my horses name is for doing something stupid. Usually missing a fence, jumping it the wrong way or jumping the wrong one.

Try Bluechip Karma I have had terrific results on this. My horse in his first tests is normally spooky and tense and will score pretty badly around 62% on Karma he will come out and do a 72%. At Aldon I thought he would be a nightmare as on grass and last year he was easily getting 44 through being a git but he performed a super test for 33 straight off which totally amazed me and nothing else has changed.

I feed 50ml for 4 days before comp and then he gets a morning feed of 50ml and at the event I inject 50ml 1 hour before getting on him into his mouth.

well done on the great xc, the big fat E happens to us all... more than once, usually. just wait till you blithely gallop past a xc fence you didn't even know was there, and complete what you thought was a great clear round inside the time... only to find a big E on the scoreboard. i've done this twice now, due to course-walking errors! hope your times are a bit further apart next time, they used to try to give an hour between phases, that might have gone now.
frown.gif
it can seem a real rush. i always try to walk the sj course first thing if at all possible, fwiw.
best of luck with the rest of your season!

well done, what a bummer, well you only make mistakes like that once!! My friend went yesterday and forgot her dressage bit!! lol
grin.gif
luckily friend managed to drive it over and stewards were really helpful and slotted her in a bit later!

Ooo, will have to chat to Hammie's owner on Karma then! However, apparently he is always the worst at the first event and settles more as the season goes...

I feel a little better reading those stories but still think I need a big slap for being so dopey!

Thank you! I think I will need to walk xc courses a few times; Munstead was very easy but I know of some that I will probably need a map with me
shocked.gif

I too hope for better times on our next one; it was very much a case of rushing and I barely had the opportunity to actually enjoy the fact of being there!

You're not silly at all - well done for being brave enough to have a go. It's bad news not having enough time to do everything properly when you're experienced, let alone when it's your first time and I doubt you'll get it wrong again. Good luck for the next one.

Thank you Rosiefan, the silliness is with regards to the fact that I show-jumped as a junior in my native country, my then trainer would be rather ashamed!
I file this under my first BE event though and will do my best next time
