I take back all the times I said I didn't want a schoolmaster, that a project would be much more satisfying! Right now a schoolmaster that wasn't trying to ditch me would be lovely.
After two weeks of Lil working nicely I thought that she was really settling down and I'd started thinking about taking her to a little RC dressage comp in a months time.
I think someone had been feeding her sherbet of something in the field before I got on! I had to be led into the school because she was far too excited to walk forwards sensibly. She then spied the other horse working calmly at the far end of the school and proceeded to rear and bronk in a classic display of "Look how well my Mummy can cling on". After 5 mins of clinging on I gave in and lunged the beast instead.
Lunging was merely another excuse to get overexcited. The other poor person who had been trying to use the school was long gone but Lil continued to prance around, tail in the air, snorting, bucking and cantering like a loon.
I stopped at the point when i thought she looked tired and calm as I don't like to over lunge. Oh how wrong I was! She was now rideable but we spent a good half hour prancing like a crazed giraffe trying to do piaffe. There were moments of brilliance but then the crazed giraffe returned.
It feels like we're back to square one. I certainly won't be taking her anywhere if the sight of one horse warming up calmly sends her completely insane.
