I take back all the times I said I didn't want a schoolmaster, that a project would be much more satisfying! Right now a schoolmaster that wasn't trying to ditch me would be lovely.

After two weeks of Lil working nicely I thought that she was really settling down and I'd started thinking about taking her to a little RC dressage comp in a months time.

I think someone had been feeding her sherbet of something in the field before I got on! I had to be led into the school because she was far too excited to walk forwards sensibly. She then spied the other horse working calmly at the far end of the school and proceeded to rear and bronk in a classic display of "Look how well my Mummy can cling on". After 5 mins of clinging on I gave in and lunged the beast instead.

Lunging was merely another excuse to get overexcited. The other poor person who had been trying to use the school was long gone but Lil continued to prance around, tail in the air, snorting, bucking and cantering like a loon.

I stopped at the point when i thought she looked tired and calm as I don't like to over lunge. Oh how wrong I was! She was now rideable but we spent a good half hour prancing like a crazed giraffe trying to do piaffe. There were moments of brilliance but then the crazed giraffe returned.

It feels like we're back to square one. I certainly won't be taking her anywhere if the sight of one horse warming up calmly sends her completely insane.

You are doing great and know you will get there! However this does remind me why I sold my TBx and went back to my comfort zone of ‘cob’.

I also feel your pain. :( :( :(
It always seems to be one step forward and two steps back
God i wish i could afford a nice well behaved horse :(
But then i look at Lucy and think it'll all be worth it in the end.:) I hope ;)

Thanks all, I just needed a rant to some people who would understand. I love her really and its just going to be even sweeter the day we get our first rosette.

*Ben and Jerrys to all for their support*

Oh gosh don't worrry, I have had mine mare for two years and still cannot perform a simple task unless she fancies it... Looks like you may have alot more fun to come yet!!

Stick in there and keep positive. The Ben and Jerry's will definitely help!! You will feel better tomorrow!! I know exactly how you feel but as you say it IS worth it when it all comes together!!

Just one suggestion in case it's any help. If she's been working nicely is it possible she has muscled up more and changed shape?? I ask because when my "project" changes shape his saddle sometimes starts to not fit so well and it results in similar shenanigans to those you experienced. I know mine has a history of back problems so I get the saddle fitter in to change the gullet as soon as he "starts". On the other hand they all have "kerrayzee" days so is prob just that. Just thought it might be worth bearing in mind/a mention, esp if she does it again!

Sounds like she's coming into season and the fact spring has finally sprung. Buy your self a lovely bottle of wine a sirloin steak a green salad, sit back and enjoy as tomorrow is another day.

Thanks, will consider the saddle as a possibility. Do you think she could have changed shape that much in a month? I suppose she has lost alot of weight.....
