Argh! Why is my Arab such a drama queen!

I've posted earlier in the month about my mare hurting her leg on a hack and that I planned on putting boots on her for hacking from now on.

So I got boots and she is having a total hissy fit about getting them on. I have never seen any horse have such a drama about back boots, apparently the front boots don't bother her!

Now she's 25 and has only ever wore travel boots or bandages on her hinds, she has never worn brushing boots so the first time I put them on I understand the drama. She basically about fell over, back leg lifted as high as it could go, hopping about on the other leg and groaning, though so is a very vocal horse.

Well she's now had them on 7 times and I think she's getting more dramatic about the whole thing. I put them on this evening, walked her out, after her huge ''I'm going to fall over'' hissy fit, took her in the school and she was trotting like bambi. I thought she'd got over it, gave her some feed and she had another hissy fit mid feed and nearly fell over again.

I'm getting very frustrated, has anyone else had this problem? What can I do? Should I bandage (which she is fine with) or try a different type of boot? I have told her off for her drama but it doesn't make any difference :s at my wits end and I don't want to hack til I get something to cover her damn legs :

ha ha she sounds like a real drama queen, she's not a chestnut by any chance is she?
What makes you think she will hurt her leg again if that was the first time in 25 years she has had an injury like that?
I sometimes do but mostly not. I will probably put them on tomorrow after reading this though lol.
Is there anyone on your yard who can let you try a different brand? I reckon though at her age it is too strangefor her and she would prefer to be naked :D
ps the thought of warm milk, yuk, can i just have the cookie please

Let me know if you find the solution! My TB is the same - fronts no problem -hinds - hates them! Particularly on his near hind. Doesn't mind bandages quite so much although he is still reasonably unco-operative when you are putting them on. Once you are on, he is completely normal & unfussed by them, but taking them off again he starts playing up.

However, he always has a wee after a hack, so I now take them off when he's going - no problem then! :D
 
Bandages as the are lighter softer and less restricting so hopefully she wont notice them, my lads are both fine with all boots and bandages to work in but awful with travel boots,
most fun at stupid o'clock in the morning when we are going somewhere trying to bandage a fidigty connemara and a stress head welsh D then loading the pain in the arse welsh d who never loads first time and is even worse when the connemara throws a strop because he is fed up of waiting!
 
I think I might just give up with the idea and bandage (at least til I get bored with that idea!) she is a chestnut, so levels of co-operation are minimal at the best of times, I just haven't seen a horse react quite so violently and continue to do so.

I like the idea of turning her out but she seems to get used to the boots then when you put them on the next day we go through the whole drama again :( it probably is her age and she's just not wanting to change her routine.

I agree that she has gone so long without boots and been fine so I should probably continue in the same way but she punctured her leg at the beginning of the month and vet says it just missed the tendon and then it caused cellulitis which wasn't much fun for her.

Horse's eh?! Who'd have them!
 
Honestly, if she's gone 25 years without boots no problem, I'd put her leg injury down to "freak accident", and keep going without boots. Sounds to me like they're causing way too much stress for both of you at this point in her life!
