ARGHHH WHY CAN'T FARMERS SORT THEIR FENCING OUT!!!!!

Sheep are escape artists.
Agreed! I've been rounding up the farm sheep (usually about 6 + lambs) for years

Lambs are very good at getting out of anywhere when they want to, they seem to wiggle through the smallest gap.

Well done you for being able to catch the little minx's and put them back. :D

I'm sure he doesn't want the lambs he's paid to create, breed and keep, squashed. Just go speak to him like a human being. I'm sure you'll find he is one, not some lamb/driver murdering lunatic :)

This is the case and is probably why the poor farmer hasn't been able to solve the problem, when he's stuck between a rock and a hard place, not allowed to block the gap re dogs, has to block the gap re lambs :-(((. Of course it has to be sorted but when two legal requirements are in direct conflict.....

There are technical solutions but they aren't easy or cheap. They involve a top hung inward lifting panel gate for dogs.

)

We had a plank of wood nailed onto the top piece of wood of the fence, that was ona loose nail so it swung from side to side if you pushed it - walkers just moved it aside for their dogs to go through, otherwise it hung down and blocked the hole..

You could always train your horses to round up the sheep.........

we get sheep appear in our fields all the time, beats me how they get in, horses don't get out?
Eventually they disappear, I guess the farmer eventually notices he's down a few

A lot of our local moorland is unfenced and always has been, it just means that drivers have to be aware of the hazard. Driving on the moor roads in the middle of the night, especially in winter, means that you will come across a random group of sheep taking warmth from the tarmac and licking up the salt! There was quite a nasty accident a few years ago a car ran into a bullock on the moor road, the animal was killed and the driver had to have his face re-built.

We were driving down a lane on our way home last year when this ewe came flying through the air, straight in front of the car. I slammed my brakes on, missed the ewe, who merrily trotted off down a track at the other side of the lane. We actually stopped to see how she had got out, there is a 3' wall that borders the lane and the land is level with the top of the wall. There is stock fencing on top of the wall, and as much as we looked, we couldn't see how she had got out, unless she had jumped over the stock fencing.

Later that week we drove past a field with a ewe tangled in barbed wire, so stopped and cut her free.

They definitely do have a death wish!

If you know who the farmer is then def speak to him first. The ones ive come across were on the A6, the only bigger road round here is the motorway. No obvious farms nearby to be able to know on a door. We watched as they almost caused an accident so used thepolive as a way to let the farmer know. From what the police said there wouldn't be trouble, was more a case of getting the off the road and informing the farmer. Not always possible to do yourself on aajor highway with no nearby farms

the lambs and ewes are lively devils, having more than a few hundred, I found it bemusing to watch them popping out of their fields on to the farm tracks! however having rounded them up many many times and returned them, I sat in the truck and watched one afternoon (they all have top quality fencing which is Sheep netting to the base, + 1 tight barb,, + 1 x smooth wire finished with a square wooden rail, all fixed to strong sturdy square wooden posts.... looks very smart!)

That afternoon I saw a ewe tread up the sheep netting which bent it down enough for it to limbo between the netting and barb, and her two lambs followed.. then another ewe tried it etc etc.

Basically the lambs (this year prolifically) have learnt that the grass really is greener on the other side! and they have been shown how to get to it! we are now having to elec up all the fencing.

And guess what ..... the cost of lamb is gong to go up this year, because our bills are up, partly due to the escape artists!

There is a problem have to leave dog access then lambs use it as well

the fields round here with lambs and footpaths have a gap next to the stile for dogs but there's a plank of wood that slots down the fencing and covers it up. To get dog through you lift it up and when you let go it drops back down. Very clever

Yep that's what I've seen too - one footpath near my parents uses an old cricket bat - perfect size and a nice handle for the walkers to make it clear what they need to do to fit their dog through.

sheep are very stupid. however, I'm sure the farmer would want to know and fix fencing as those silly lambs are all worth money.
we have a mysterious incident of an escaping pair of cows on the farm my horses are on... there are a few fields with cows in, all appear to be fully fenced, but there is a pair of cows that keep getting out and turning up around the farm. I swear they have a mischievous look on their face! the farmer is at a loss, honestly cant figure out how they get out, all the other cows stay put. perhaps late at night they are show jumping cows!

We always have sheep out on our roads round here - my mums partner hit a sheep only a few days ago, although apparently it just rolled up the bonnet, rolled on the road then got up, shook and walked off! Dented his car though and who knows which field they came from so he cant even get the farmer to pay!

The problem we have is with our neighbours (big!) dog who goes free range regularly. Its driving me nuts right now, especially as it keeps cra**ing in our front garden and then coming into our back garden to play with our puppy and "invite" her to escape onto the road! Got more dangerous yesterday as my OH very nearly hit the stupid dog whilst he was riding his motorbike along the road! Fed up but dont want to fall out with the neighbours :(
