I need to buy some black leather chaps/gaitors to go with black jod boots and wear to compete in (so they need to be smart)

I have the Ariat concord chaps in brown and love them but they have perished quite quickly :(

I used to be a big treadstep fan but not sure what their smarter chaps are like (used to buy suede ones)

so any suggestions? recommendations?..

I have some black jod boots in mind so not bothered about brand as they will have to mix and match together (I'm working on the principle that black is black so they will match)

I will be wearing them most days and then giving them a good spruce up for comps

home made chilli on offer, nice and hot!!!

i have the tredstep gaiters and havent worn them much but the zips have gone very quickly. next time im going to get ariat ones. i think tthey look smarter too:)

I have recently bought a pair of these (brown version) http://www.saddlery.biz/riding-wear...iding-gaiters/toggi-extreme-tulsa-gaiter.html . They are very smart, very comfy and the service/posting from the company was ace. Not sure how they will fair with wear BUT when they are reduced to £20 from £70 you can't really grumble. So impressed with mine I'm tempted to buy another pair to stash away. They do have a shop on ebay and i bought mine from there (same price).
ETA they are v.similar to Ariat as a friend has the made to measure ariat gaiters and been comparing.

I have the treadstep deluxe half chaps which I completely love. have had mine for about 5 years, and they're still going strong, I tend to wear them for clinics and lessons but not competing, love 'em.

I have some Ariat leather gaiters (can't remember which make) and they have lasted really well (and I never clean them or treat them). I love them and would definitely buy them again.

I have the ariat ones, once you have worn them in they are really comfy and supportive although you wouldnt want to wear them for long peroids before then as I couldnt feel my feet after a while and neither could a friend with hers. They do look smart though and I have them with out ariat boots and they are fine.

yes I love my ariats but they have broken open in places between the zip and the stretchy leather join. I did ask ariat what I could do but they said send them back so they can see (i supplied a photo) but i can't do that as I won't have anything to ride in! :)

hhhhmmm treadsteps are normally good with zips v robust.....maybe I need a diff brand altogether....

Tredstep have just launched a new gaiter, it's AMAZING! A rep showed us it and it's really soft and smart. They look like they'll be excellent.

I have a gorgeous pair of Mark Todd leather chaps, they cost me £47, they are slim fitting look smart and don't sag and also not cut stupidly high on the outside.

Ariats every time for me :) I compete in mine too. The only problem I have had is that the popper has popped off a couple of times but the local cobbler just puts it back on. :D

Ariat have a fairly new one called the Covington; I bought some last summer. They did takr some breaking in as they are quite formal, sort of long boot substitutes, but I'm really pleased with them, now they are broken in they are comfy and very smart :)

Used to have Treadstep and loved them but couldn't get the size I wanted once so bought some Ariats - now a real convert, love them. Comfortable, smart and, considering the amount I use them, durable. My friend has English Gaiter chaps and the zips are tooooooo narrow and fiddly. My Ariat zips are chunky and sturdy - easy to do up even when you're in a rush or it's bloomin freezin and your fingers aren't working properly ;). There are not many things that I will happily pay out for but my chaps are one of them.

I have Ariat Monocos for competing, they are gorgeous, more like long boots but they fit like a glove.
I have Ariat Concords for everyday and hunting, they are way more flimsy, but they are my 'cheap' pair that get battered and are easily replaced.

Love Tredstep - so smart & so comfy, also huge range of lengths/widths to fit us (2 are on the short side with wide calves, 1 fairly normal, but again short) Tredstep also go up to 19.5" long, so suit the longer legged types too.

I have dy'on black chaps, they are expensive but look fantastic and wear fantastically well. Good strong zip and a spur/boot protector at the bottom. I think sederholme stock them and they come in a broad range of sizes. I had Ariat previously and find these 100 times better and worth the extra cost.

I have the tredstep with matching jodh boots, abs love them but only wear for best, look smart enough for dressage and showing, also know people who have the ariat leather and swear by them. all down to what you can afford and what fits your legs the best

I've had both and treadstep are the best. Ariat ones tended to stretch and I couldn't get the right length (either too wide or too short) but my treadsteps fit perfectly! :D

I have had a pair of the Tredstep stretch leather chaps for at least 5 years. I have had the elastic replaced that goes under your foot but other than that they are great. I wear them nearly every day, muck out in them and never clean them. :)

I tried Ariat chaps as I have Ariat boots but they don't fit me properly. If I remember correctly they were too wide on my ankles.

i brought english gaiter ones 4 years ago they do a soft leather version which i brought for everyday yard use and they have been amazing they have only strectched a little and dont move around and are worn every day they also do a stiffer leather one which looks more like a boot when on but dont know how comfy they are, also just brought pro-chaps gaiter butter soft leather and the comfiest ive worn but may not be what you want for comps even tho they are pro-chap competition chaps look on website.

Tredstep gaiters; if you can find the new ones which are stretch leather (victory I think they are called) they are a close match to the ones I have had for 5 years in daily use; and still look smart enough with a good clean and polish for hunting/BE and BSJA!

I like the lightweight feel of the stretch ones as they mould round your leg and are barely discernible. I found all the ariat ones to feel either bulky or baggy, or even worse tight around the ankle and front of the boot.

Failing that I saw some lovely ones on the page of the De Niro boots, sadly my bank balance won't reach to those but they did look lovely!

I used to have tried step but been a convert to ariat for a few years. I did find they only lasted a couple of years but when u spoke to an ariat rep she explained that there were different types for different purposes. She showed me the ones for daily use and they have been worn daily for four years and showing no sign of wear. I also have some top of the range soft black leather for best.

I have black mountain horse Silhouette ones-the most butter soft leather ever! Got them online from, think it was Cavaletti something... (I looked at Ariat, tredstep &english gaiter co).

I bought a pair of konig leather gaiters and they are soooo smart, best competiton sort of gaiters ive seen and they even have little crowns on them :) dyon gaiters are also amazing , cant rate them enough !
